The flower growers in Nhat Tan flower village located in Hanoi provide meticulous care to close to 100 That Thon peach trees.
The That Thon peach trees are considered royal flowers as they are a rare form of plant and often prove very difficult to grow. They are put into special rooms with air conditioners in order for them to bloom just at the right time for the Lunar New Year festival (Tet). There are very few households growing any That Thon peach trees. Local gardener Le Ham is one of the view households in Nhat Tan in Tay Ho district, Hanoi, to cultivate the peach flower trees. Le Ham says it requires a lot of investment and effort for growers to give the necessary care to these special peach blossoms. Mr Ham says in his garden, several of the That Thon peach trees have been placed in special rooms with specific conditions. Air conditioners have installed in the special rooms to control the temperature Special care helps the peach blossoms avoid the harsh weather conditions of winter and allows them to bloom just in time for Tet.
Different from other types of peach blossoms, the That Thon peach trees have an old style with a large stump and trunk.
The That Thon peach blossoms are red with each diameter of blooming petal reaching 4-5cm. Some flowers can grow up to 30-50 petals. Growers plant grass around the stump so they can detect the early signs of diseases from the trees. It takes growers between 7 to 10 years to plant the peach trees and for them to create a good shape and beautiful petals. Due to the meticulous care needed and their special colour, the rental price of That Thon peach blossoms is very high, usually ranging between VND10-40 million. Many of the trees are ordered by customers several weeks before Tet. |
