VietNamNet Bridge - The following companies have been found causing serious environmental pollution in Vietnam. Most of them are still operating.

1.Formosa Ha Tinh leads the list. It caused the biggest ever environmental catastrophe in Vietnam that led to mass fish deaths in four provinces in the central region, from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien – Hue provinces.

The company claimed the responsibility for the incident and committed compensation of $500 million for the damages.

2.The Vinh Tan 2 thermopower plant, since its operation in January 2015, has been polluting the environment with the dust it produces. The problem was so serious that in April 2015, thousands of locals blocked Highway No 1 in a protest against the plant.

In October 2015 and January 2016, other accidents occurred when the waste water leaked from the coal residue ground and reached residential quarters.

3.Vedan Vietnam, a MSG manufacturer, in 2008 was found illegally discharging untreated waste water into the Thi Vai River in Dong Nai province. One year later, the HCMC Institute of Natural Resources and the Environment issued a conclusion that Vedan caused 80-90 percent of the pollution to the Thi Vai River.

In 2006, the company was discovered discharging untreated waste water into the river.

Vedan was fined VND267.5 million for the violations.

4. In May 2016, the Ba Ria – Vung Tau provincial authorities decided to seal off all the dying workshops of Mei Sheng Textiles Vietnam after it discovered n six occasions the company’s violations of the environment protection laws.

The Taiwanese invested enterprise was not licensed to run dying workshops, but it still ran the workshops and discharged water directly to the Da Den Lake, which provides water to 1 million people.

5. The Hao Duong Tanning Company was many times discovered as discharging waste water that caused pollution to Dong Dien Canal in HCMC.

In 2014, the company was forced to suspend operation and pay the fine of VND6.39 billion. As it was overdue in implementing the duties, its proposal to resume operation was refused.

6. The report of the Natural Resources & Environment Institute in 2012 showed that 113.6 hectares of 682.8 hectares of the Ba Cheo Canal was polluted because of the waste water from Sonadezi Long Thanh, an industrial zone developer.

7. In the years from 2007 to 2011, the Khanh Hoa provincial People’s Committee three times decided to fine Huyndai Vinashin, a shipbuilder, for discharging hazardous waste.

It was estimated that 800,000 tons of untreated nix particles, called the ‘quiet killer’, were discharged to the environment.
