Nguyen Lan, his grandfather, was a teacher, dictionary editor, writer and researcher, who helped build the foundation for education universities in Vietnam. 

His uncles are all well-known professors and scientists who made great contributions to the development of the country and the world. His father, Nguyen Lan Dung, is a famous scientist in biology.

Hieu is well known for being a talented cardiology surgeon.

As a child, Hieu dreamed of becoming a painter. At the age of 17, Hieu witnessed his grandmother suffering pain caused by lung cancer. He decided to become a physician to save people’s lives, the way his mother followed in her young days.

Hieu is known for his creativity in congenital cardiac intervention with tools that have been invented by Hieu and commended by foreign colleagues.

Hieu believes that Vietnam doesn’t lag behind the world in congenital cardiac intervention. The number of patients who have received treatment in Vietnam is the highest in South East Asia.

He is respected by colleagues from countries with advanced medicine. He believes that Vietnamese physicians not only can catch up with the development of the world’s medicine, but can find new ways to contribute to the development of cardiology.

As a cardiologist for the World Health Organization (WHO), Hieu gives lectures and direct treatment to patients in many countries which have different healthcare systems. 

Hieu said he first visited India in 2006. What impressed him the most was not the splendid Taj Mahal, but the big round eyes of children and the images of mothers bathing their children in rain puddles at the foot of highway bridges.

Hieu has been to India 20 times in the last 10 years, working in 10 cities and tens of hospitals.

Since 1999, when Hieu finished study in France and returned to Vietnam, he has been devoting himself to the development of Vietnam’s medicine. 

He is one of the first surgeons who performed congenital heart intervention in Vietnam. 

He is also the founder of the units treating congenital heart diseases at big hospitals of Bach Mai in Hanoi, in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Da Nang.
