Prof. Phan Manh Huong in Hanoi Dec 2107

The man who deserves credit for developing the journal is Associate Prof Dr Phan Manh Huong, head of the editorial board.

Huong, speaking after a seminar on magnetism and nano materials held in Phu Quoc, said that he will become one of four key editors of the Journal of Electronic Materials, a prestigious ISI journal from Springer Publishing House.

“The responsibility will be heavy. But this is a great opportunity for me to accumulate experience to develop the Journal of Science: Advanced Materials and Devices and turn it into a prestigious & influential international journal,” Huong said.

About Huong, chair of the Academy of Young Scientists of Vietnam, said: “Huong is an excellent scientist. He is deeply attached to the fatherland of Vietnam.”

Huong helps connect young Vietnamese scientists with the world and brings them opportunities to study abroad. He also invites foreign specialists to Vietnam for academic exchange. 

Huong accepted to become the head of the editorial board of the journal published by Hanoi National University. Upon receiving the invitation from Prof Nguyen Huu Duc, deputy president of the Hanoi National University and Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Huong was a bit anxious because he understood it would be difficult to develop an international journal in Vietnam.

The first thing Huong and Duc did to develop the journal was impose international standards. 

Prof Dr Nguyen Chau, a leading Asian magnetist, said: “I can see the names of a lot of prestigious scientists of international stature on the advisory board of the journal. I think it took Huong a lot of time and effort to persuade them to take this work.”

Huong confirmed that most scientists expressed reluctance to become members of the advisory board of a new journal. However, Huong finally managed to get their support when he said Hanoi National University wanted to have a prestigious international journal in Vietnam.

It was also a difficult task to have high-quality scientific articles for the first issue. At that time, Duc and Huong had to contact every research team in Vietnam and overseas and persuade them to publish articles in the journal. Since then, the number of articles sent to the editorial board has been increasing steadily.

Prof Nguyen Van Hieu from ITIMS (International Training Institute for Materials Science) said the journal is now Vietnam’s best international journal in physics.
