The number of students who make wrong choices about their career has risen, educators have warned.

Linh, a third year student majoring in business administration at the HCM City Food Industry University, said she did not like her major.

“I sometimes think of trying another discipline, but I regret the time I have spent on business administration,” she said, adding that a lot of her friends have dropped out or have been expelled from school because they were tired of studying.

Only after several years of studying do students realize that following university education is not what they want.
Tens of first year students at Tay Nguyen University’s pedagogy faculty have decided to give up studying after they realized that they were not sure if they can find jobs after graduation.

The school enrolled 53 students in a literature major in September, when the 2015-2016 academic year began, but 11 have dropped out.

At other schools, hundreds are forced to stop going to school every semester because of their poor learning results. Educators say one of the major reasons is that they chose subjects unsuited to them.

According to Tran The Hoang, vice president of the HCM City Economics University, about 4 percent of students were forced to stop their study three years ago.

“If they do not consider their abilities and aspirations when choosing branches of learning, they will not be interested in studying and researching,” he explained.

Tran Dinh Ly, head of the training division of the HCM City Agriculture and Forestry University, said if students chose the wrong fields to study, they would not gain success in their future jobs.

Easy enrolment conditions

Dang Vu Ngoan, president of the HCM City Food Industry University, believes that it is the current enrolment scheme which sets easy conditions on incoming students which leads to bad decisions made by students.

In the past, students had to sit the national university entrance exams to be enrolled in universities. Under the current scheme, schools can set up enrolment plans of their own.

In order to attract more students, many schools set easy requirements. This encourages more and more students to go to university instead of junior colleges or vocational schools. It is very difficult for some students that lack capacity to follow their studies; therefore, many of them have decided to discontinue studying or are forced to stop studying.
