The town of Moc Chau Farm in the northern mountainous province of Son La is unlike other mountainous areas in Vietnam. Along the town streets are multi-storey buildings and on the road are modern motorbikes and cars.

VietNamNet reporters paid a visit to the dairy farm of the family of Mr. Duong Van Noi in the town of Moc Chau Farm. Noi said the farm is about 2.4 hectares in area, with 76 dairy cows, worth about VND8 billion (nearly $400,000).

Noi said he collected milk from 30 cows. Each day he earned several USD from selling fresh milk.

Mr. Phan Doan Hiep, another (VND) billionaire in Moc Chau Farm Town, said his farm has 120 cows, with over 50 cows producing milk. Hiep earned about VND200 million ($10,000) of profit each month from the cows.

Like Hiep and Noi, many families in the town have become billionaires (VND) thanks to breeding dairy cows to provide fresh milk to local milk firms.

Dairy cow breeders said that thanks to their good relations with milk producers and milk price insurance, they are never worried about losses caused by the fall of fresh milk prices or death of dairy cows.

Currently, about 600 families in the town of Moc Chau Farm raise dairy cows, from 20-30 to 200 cows/households. Most of the families are now billionaires (VND) because with at least 20 cows, they have over VND1 billion, said Pham Hai Nam, Deputy General Director of Mocchaumilk.

Moc Chau District Chairman, Mr. Pham Duc Chinh, told VietNamNet that the average income of local households are VND40-VND50 million/month and even over VND100 million/month for some households.

"In 1991, I went to Thailand and saw all dairy cow breeders carried fresh milk on their motorbikes. At that time I just wish that cow breeders in Moc Chau could have a motorcycle. In 2007, all households here had motorcycles. And now they have hundreds of cars here,” said Mr. Tran Cong Chien, Chairman of Mocchaumilk.
