The year 2018 witnessed a massive collection of gold medals won by excellent Vietnamese students at the International Olympiads in the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and informatics.
Pham Duc Anh bagged the gold medal for Vietnam at the 2018 International Chemistry Olympiad.
Double gold medals in chemistry
Pham Duc Anh, a former 12th grader from the Natural Science High School for Gifted Students under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU – Hanoi) was the only contestant to baga gold medal for Vietnam at the 2018 International Chemistry Olympiad. That was his second successive gold medal in the world's largest intellectual arena.
Duc Anh said that, with the gold, he successfully implemented his promise to change the colour of the medal for his brother Pham Anh Tuan, who won the bronze at the 2018 Chemistry Olympiad. The achievement was a pride for himself, his family and the nation.
On October 19, Duc Anh, who is now a new student of Hanoi Medical University, was awarded the Independence Order, third class, for his achievements.
World’s highest mark in biology
Nguyen Phuong Thao attained the highest score at the 2018 International Biology Olympiad.
Former student of the Natural Science High School for Gifted Students under the VNU - Hanoi, Nguyen Phuong Thao, attained the highest score at the 2018 International Biology Olympiad in Iran.
She won a silver medal at last year’s Olympiad, therefore, she tried her best in learning over the past year. As a result, with 98.13/100 points, Thao surpassed 261 students from 71 countries and territories to gain the highest achievement. She was honoured with the Independence Order, third class.
At the 2018 International Biology Olympiad, Tran Thi Minh Anh from Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students (Hai Phong city) and Hoang Minh Trung from Thanh Hoa province’s Lam Son High School for Gifted Students also brought home gold medals.
Two gold medals in physics within two months
The physical talent Nguyen Ngoc Long
Former 12th graders Nguyen Ngoc Long and Tran Duc Huy from Lam Son High School for Gifted Students (Thanh Hoa province) and Hanoi – Amsterdam High School for Gifted Student each excellently earned four gold medals, including two at the 19th Asian Physics Olympiad (AphO 2018) held in Vietnam and two others from the 49th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 2018) in Portugal.
Nguyen Ngoc Long’s talent in physics was detected and fostered since he was a tenth grader. At the international Olympiad, he achieved 38.1/50 points and ranked 13th in the world.
Meanwhile, Tran Duc Huy was awarded as the best contestant of the host country at the AphO 2018. With two golds this year, he raised the total number of individual medals at regional and international competitions to three during the 2017-2018 academic year.
Mathematics: the only gold medal

Nguyen Quang Bin, former student from the Natural Science High School for Gifted School under the VNU - Hanoi, was the only gold medal winner of the Vietnamese team at the 2018 International Mathematics Olympiad in Romania.
It was the first time that Bin participated in an international competition. With total 35/42 points, Bin surprisingly brought home the precious medal.
Currently, he is a student of the Natural Science University under the VNU – Hanoi. He said he would devote himself to the mathematics of the country.
Informatics: success of Hanoi student

Like other scientific subjects, informatics contributed four medals to the total number of medals at the International Olympiads this year. Pham Duc Thang, a former student from the Natural Science High School under the VNU – Hanoi, was the only Vietnamese contestant to win a gold medal at the 2018 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2018) in Japan.
Duc Thang used to go to a training course for talented math students. After that, he was introduced to the team of good students in informatics, therefore, his ability and fascination with informatics were aroused.
Currently, he is a student of the Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Engineering and Technologyunder the VNU – Hanoi.
