All land dispute issues involving Thu Thiem Peninsula in HCMC’s District 2 will be fully addressed by next year, Nguyen Thien Nhan, Secretary of the HCMC Party Committee, said at a meeting held early this week to name a new Party chief for this district, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported.

Thu Thiem land dispute issues will be fully resolved by next year, HCMC Party chief Nguyen Thien Nhan said at a meeting held on December 10 in HCMC. This file photo features a view of Thu Thiem New Urban area

The protracted land disputes in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area in the district must be tackled quickly, Nhan said, adding that Party Secretary General and State President Nguyen Phu Trong, in a meeting with HCMC leaders last week in Hanoi, had expressed hope that the HCMC’s Party Committee would successfully deal with the complaints lodged by Thu Thiem residents.

Trong expected the city to resolve the issues in line with prevailing regulations and ensure the legal rights of residents.

Similarly, retired high-ranking State leaders have pinned their hopes on the early resolution of the disputes, Nhan noted.

The time for resolving the issues at Thu Thiem has arrived, as the Government Inspectorate has published the results of an inspection into the project, Nhan said.

Since receiving the results, the Standing Board of the municipal Party Committee has held 10 meetings and clarified shortcomings in the project’s execution, as well as mapped out appropriate solutions.

Accordingly, Nhan asked the newly appointed Party chief of District 2, Tran Van Thuan, to obtain a complete overview of the Thu Thiem project and land disputes to jointly work with the city on these issues, while conducting socioeconomic tasks for the district.

He added that measurements of the 4.3-hectare area in Thu Thiem have been completed.

Responding to the land issues in Thu Thiem, Tran Van Thuan pledged to address the land problem, in cooperation with the Standing Board of the district’s Party Committee.

In mid-January 2019, the competent agencies will meet with 321 households living in the 4.3-hectare area to address the issues, said Thuan.

Thuan, a member of the municipal Party Committee and deputy head of the HCMC Party Committee’s Internal Affairs Commission, was appointed the District 2 Party chief to replace Nguyen Hoai Nam.

Thuan was born in 1962 in HCMC’s outlying district of Binh Chanh. He is currently a member of the 10th municipal Party Committee’s Executive Board (tenure 2015-2020). He graduated from the People’s Security University, earning a Master of Laws and an agricultural engineering degree.

Nguyen Hoai Nam was recently charged with involvement in a case in which nearly 5,000 square meters of land in the city's central business district was allocated and leased without going through a public bidding process while he was serving as head of the land use planning division at the HCMC Department of Natural Resources and Environment

Earlier, the municipal Party Committee’s Standing Board suspended Nam from all Party posts. Two days ago, the Ministry of Public Security’s Investigation Agency issued a decision to prosecute Nam and place him under house arrest for his alleged violation.
