Telecommunications: 2G, 3G stopped, spam calls blocked
In 2022, some mobile network operators began stopping 2G and 3G in some areas, which helped to simplify networks and optimize infrastructure, optimize operation costs and provide frequency resources to 4G. The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) decided to stop 2G technology by September 2024 at the latest.
Spam calls were one of the most burning issues of 2022. MIC requested telecom carriers to prevent spam calls and strictly manage information about mobile subscribers. Technical solutions were not enough to solve this problem. Mobile network operators, referring to regulations, handle the subscribers spreading spam calls.
One of the important events in 2022 was the National Assembly’s approval of the law on amending and supplementing some articles of the Law on Radio Frequency, which aims at strictly managing and allocating radio frequencies, thus creating an environment with healthy competition, promoting development of telecommunication infrastructure, contributing to creating platform for the national digital transformation, developing digital economy and digital society.
The amended law has regulations on licensing frequencies for better and more effective management and use, especially with ‘rare’ and ‘precious’ bands.
Digital transformation in all aspects of life
Vietnam’s ICT panorama in 2022 witnessed strong moves of digital transformation. The phrase ‘digital transformation’ is seen and heard regularly in all fields of socio-economic life.
The Prime Minister decided that October 10 every year will be the National Day on Digital Transformation.
Also in 2022, the Prime Minister issued a directive on the development of e-government and digital government, and the promotion of national digital transformation. In addition, the Prime Minister promulgated the national strategy on digital economy and digital society development by 2025 with the vision towards 2030.
Developing a digital economy will help overcome the lower average income group of countries by 2025, and join the group of countries with higher average income level by 2030 and then become a high income country by 2045.
Developing a digital society ensures favorable social security policies, and contributes to making Vietnam a digital safe, humane country. The government has decided that the digital economy will make up 20 percent of GDP by 2025 and 30 percent of GDP by 2030.
In 2022, FPT and Viettel stated they can manufacture chips. FPT Semiconductor, belonging to FPT Group, introduced the first line of microchips applied in IoT (Internet of Things) products in the healthcare sector, turning the dream of manufacturing semiconductor components into a Vietnamese initiative.
The integrated semiconductor chip is directly designed and structured by FPT Semiconductor engineers, aiming to serve specific industries and products. It is designed in Vietnam, and produced and packed at a factory in South Korea.
Another bright spot in ICT in 2022 was the movement of large corporations in the world to Vietnam, placing Vietnam in a new position on the world’s technology map. Samsung has put its R&D (research and development) center in Hanoi into operation.
