According to research from Vietnam Report Company, the Vietnamese tourism sector saw annual growth of 15% in visitor number. 2018 was seen as a success for the industry which welcomed around 15.6 million international and 80 million domestic tourists, earning revenue of VND620 trillion (USD26.66 billion).
Vietnam’s foreign traveller growth was roughly 21% per year.
Vietnam expects to see some 18 million foreigners and 85 million domestic travellers this year, up 15% and 6% on-year respectively. The country has set a goal of USD35 billion from the tourism industry in 2020, accounting for 10% of national GDP.
However, Vietnam Report Company has warned of challenges in the local tourism industry, including poor infrastructure, lack of resources for tourism development and the modest efficiency in using abundant tourism potentials.
Currently, international visitors mostly come to famous sites such as Nha Trang, Danang and Phu Quoc, while new places like Co To and Ly Son have still seen the low number of foreigners.
Experts suggested that it is important to finalise regulations on tourism management and deal with illegal tours; focus on infrastructure development such as airports and highways to support tourism development.
It was also essential to exempt long-term visa for tourists from key markets, raise public awareness about code of behaviour in relation to tourists and prevent and control overcharging and theft at tourist sites.
Travel firms have been urged to take advantage of technology to promote their products and services to attract customers.
