Only one of them, Vinamilk (VNM), had stayed in the top 10 by November 2016. The other big companies have fallen, while the prices of once bluechips such as STB and SAM have fallen far below the nominal price.

1.Ten years ago, FPT, with VND27.973 trillion, topped the list of the companies with highest capitalization value.

However, after the price fell in 2007-2008, thevFPT share price has been ‘walking slowly’. Though FPT is considered the leading technology firm, its major revenue comes from wholesale and retail of technology goods.

In technology goods distribution, FPT is compared with The Gioi Di Dong, a young business which has been developing rapidly.

2.Vinamilk has jumped from the second to the first position in capitalization value, from VND19.875 trillion to VND195.947 trillion, a sharp increase of 886 percent.

They were the best known names in 2006, known for having the highest capitalization value. However, big changes occurred in the last 10 years.  
Vinamilk has been witnessing high steady growth in the last 10 years and paying stable high dividends of 40 percent. Considered the ‘goose that lays golden eggs’, Vinamilk shares have been hunted by investors. Nine percent of Vinamilk shares were put into auction on December 12 with the starting price of VND144,000 per share.


3.ACB was once one of the two Vietnamese biggest joint stock banks and its shares were hunted from 2006 to 2010. However, after some troubles, ACB has become quiet.

By the end of November, its capitalization value had decreased to VND15.864 trillion, a 4 percent decrease if compared with 10 years ago. 

4. Sacombank, the other of the two banks, has become quite different after it changed hands several times and admitted Southern Bank.

Ten years ago, the bank’s capitalization value was VND15 trillion, but the figure had decreased to VND14.592 trillion by November.

5.Pha Lai Thermopower has seen the capitalization value drop sharply by 62 percent from VND14.292 trillion in 2006 to VND5.383 trillion, while its price dropped from VND105,000 per share in early 2007 to VND16,000. 

6.PVD, the drilling & well services company, which had VND11.356 trillion in capitalization value 10 years ago, now has VND8.8 trillion only. PVD’s heyday was in 2014, when the oil price reached the record high of $110 per barrel.

However, PVD has become less attractive as the oil price has fallen dramatically, now hovering around $60 per barrel.

7. Like Vinamilk, SSI, a securities company, has been performing well in the last 10 years. Its capitalization value had increased by 19 percent to VND9.26 trillion by November.
