At just 18 years old, Au Viet Hoang, an ethnic Nung student from Huu Lung High School in Lang Son, achieved a remarkable score of 29 in Vietnam’s 2025 national high school exam - Math 9.5, Chemistry 10, Biology 9.5 - making him the top scorer in Lang Son province for the science-oriented block B.

With this result, Hoang earned admission into the Medicine program at Hanoi Medical University, one of Vietnam’s most competitive majors, without needing any regional or ethnic preference points.

Hoang also holds a 7.0 IELTS certificate, underscoring his academic diligence and drive to reach beyond local boundaries.

“I was overwhelmed with pride and excitement when I learned I would attend Hanoi Medical University,” Hoang shared.

Hoang’s dream of becoming a doctor took root early in life, shaped by memories of watching his father, a rural doctor, treating patients at a small health station in their commune.

“Seeing my father treat people, especially the poor, filled me with admiration. His dedication made me realize that medicine is not just a job, but a way to serve humanity,” he said.

Adapting to university life

After almost a semester in Hanoi, Hoang admits that medical school is no easy path.

“Coming from a provincial high school, I initially found the coursework quite heavy,” he said. “But I remind myself that perseverance and hard work will help me keep up. Surrounded by talented classmates, I feel motivated to improve every day.”

To stay grounded and focused, Hoang maintains the habits that carried him through high school: strict self-discipline, intellectual curiosity, and a healthy lifestyle.

“To study well, you must take care of both your mind and body - eat properly, sleep enough, and stay healthy. That’s how I keep my energy for learning,” he said.

He finds strength in shared effort and quiet companionship.

“Sometimes we don’t even tutor each other - just sitting together and seeing everyone focused is enough to keep me going.”

Dreaming beyond limits

Hoang hopes to inspire others to set bold goals and believe in their potential, no matter their background.

“There were times I doubted my abilities, but aiming higher pushed me forward. No matter your background, you have the right to dream and to strive for success.”

Living in the university dormitory, he is adjusting to life away from home - budgeting, managing his time, joining clubs, and even tutoring high school students in his spare time to support his living expenses.

“I want to tell other young people that in today’s connected world, everyone has the opportunity to learn. Success depends on determination, not on where you come from.”

Recognized for excellence

With his impressive academic record and clear sense of purpose, Au Viet Hoang was among 150 outstanding ethnic minority students and youth honored at the 2025 National Commendation Ceremony in Hanoi. The annual event recognizes resilience, academic excellence, and community contributions by ethnic minority youth across Vietnam.

This ceremony doesn’t just honor results - it celebrates young people like Hoang who pursue personal dreams with the hope of serving others and improving their communities.
