The recall includes 16,964 Corollas assembled in Vietnam from January 4, 2010 to December 29, 2012.

The company said the Takata airbag inflator module of these cars could be affected by humidity. In case of accidents, when the front passenger airbag system is activated, the release of inert gas could sometimes generate too much pressure inside the inflation module and make the module break. Metal debris could injure passengers.

Toyota Vietnam will examine and replace the airbag inflator module of the cars’ front seats free of charge.

The cars with airbags that were not provided by Takata are not subject to the recall.

Meanwhile, more than 3,526 other Toyota and Lexus vehicles are also being called back over airbag sensor problems.

They include 2,043 Corollas produced in Vietnam from June 29, 2015 to December 16, 2015, 1,182 imported Hilux units made from July 1, 2015 to November 30, 2015, one imported Toyota Prius made on June 16, 2015, 46 imported Lexus NX 200ts made from May 25, 2015 to September 30, 2015 and 254 imported Lexus RX 350s made from May 25, 2015 to January 6, 2016.

The airbag sensor examination and replacement will also be conducted free of charge, the firm said.-VNA
