Traders at An Dong Market in HCM City's District 5 are protesting and complaining about the facility's severe deterioration.

An Dong Market is the go-to place for locals for clothes and footwear since it was built 30 years ago. However, few people visit the market now as it is deteriorating and traders are upset.

According to the traders, they contributed VND217bn (USD9.5m) and wanted the money to be used to renovate and upgrade the market with a better floor, walls and lighting system. The roof leaks when it rains and the building’s wiring is exposed. The walls have all become patchy and haven't been repainted.

On September 19, hundreds of traders gathered at the market's entrance and demanded the district's authorities to scrap the fixed-term kiosk renting contract and recognise the traders' rights over their kiosks because such contracts are not required at traditional markets.

They also demanded to deposit VND217bn they contributed to repair the market.

On the next day, Pham Quoc Huy, chairman of District 5 People's Committee, apologised to the traders for the delay in repairing the market.
