Vietnam’s Vu Thi Trang won a berth in the quarter-finals of the Vietnam Open badminton tournament yesterday.

The No 4 seed defeated qualifier Sarita Suwannakitborihan of Thailand 21-16, 21-18 in the women’s singles at the Nguyen Du Gymnasium.
Trang will next play No 7 Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei who defeated her compatriot Liang Tiang Yu 21-18, 21-12.
Trang is currently world No 53 while Pai is No 47. It will be the first meeting of the two players.
In the mixed doubles, host athletes Do Tuan Duc and Pham Nhu Thao were ousted after losing 21-13, 21-9 to qualifying pair Yang Minh-Tse and Sung Shuo Yun from Chinese Taipei in the second round, ending Vietnam’s interest in the event.
