Newly-elected Politburo Member and Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang has been nominated as the secretary of HCM City's Party Committee for the next five-year term.

The decision made by the Politburo was announced during an official ceremony organised by the HCM City's Party Committee yesterday (February 5) afternoon in the presence of other Politburo members Dinh The Huynh, standing member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee and Pham Minh Chanh, head of the Central Party Organisation Commission.

During the ceremony, Huynh, who announced the decision, said that besides the advantages HCM City had experienced during the past years, it still faces numerous challenging issues.

The Politburo is confident that after being nominated, Thang will further utilise his creativity to lead the HCM City's Party Committee towards developing the city further.

In response to his nomination, Thang said that he faces huge pressure after being assigned to lead the country's biggest city with dynamism and creativity. He is confident to have the advantage of Party Committee members and achievements of the previous leaders.

At the ceremony, Politburo Member and Deputy Secretary of HCM City's Party Committee Vo Van Thuong was nominated for the new post as head of the Central Party's Publicity and Education Committee.

Secretary of HCM City's Party Committee Dinh La Thang, 56, who is a native of Nam Dinh has a Ph. D degree. He was elected to the Politburo during the 12th Party Congress in late January.

Being an official of the transport sector, Thăng is famous for his management and firm decisions. He had dismissed several subordinate transport officials who underperformed.

On February 3, he dismissed the general director of the Hanoi Railway Company for planning to purchase hundreds of used train cabins from China.

Thăng is the member of the 10th and 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Before becoming the Minister of Transport, he was the chairman of the Board of Petrovietnam, the national oil and gas company.

He was deputy secretary of Provincial Communist Party of Thua Thien-Hue Province (November 2003 to December 2005) and chairman of Song Da Corporation since April 2001.

On the same day, the Politburo nominated Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai to the post of secretary of Hanoi City's Party Committee.
