Vehicles travel on the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, part of the North-South Expressway. The Government has asked the Ministry of Transport to basically complete the North-South Expressway project by 2025.

Vietnam has set a target to have 5,000 kilometers of expressways by 2030. Therefore, the Ministry of Transport should clarify the necessity, effectiveness and ability to allocate capital for the subprojects of the North-South Expressway project in the 2021-2025 period, according to the local media.

It must also consult with the relevant agencies on the investment in the subprojects of the expressway project and report the results to the competent agencies before seeking the National Assembly’s approval at a sitting in July.

The expressway, stretching from Hanoi to Can Tho, was designed to be nearly 1,800 kilometers long. The Ministry of Transport is executing 11 subprojects with a total length of 654 kilometers, passing through 13 localities.

Besides the North-South Expressway project, the Government also asked the Ministry of Transport to study other expressways, such as Can Tho-Ca Mau, Chau Doc-Can Tho-Soc Trang, another connecting the south-central region and the Central Highlands, Ring Roads No. 3 and 4 in HCMC, Ring Roads No. 4 and 5 in Hanoi and some roads in the northern mountainous region.

The Government encouraged localities with strong capital capacity and experience to invest in the expressway sections passing through their localities, proactively clear the sites and provide building materials for such projects.
