Trinh Xuan Thanh is seen at an ongoing court trial in Hanoi. In a graft case at the PetroVietnam Power Land JSC (PVP Land) on January 24, Trinh Xuan Thanh will also show up at court as defendant

Trinh Xuan Thanh is now standing trial on alleged charges of violating State rules on economic management causing serious consequences, and embezzlement at Vietnam Oil and Gas Group and PetroVietnam Construction Corporation.

The PVP Land hearing is expected to run until February 6, including on weekend days, according to a Thanh Nien newspaper report.

Eight defendants are charged with embezzlement.

They are Trinh Xuan Thanh, former chairman of the PetroVietnam Construction Corporation (PVC); Nguyen Ngoc Sinh, former PVP Land general director; Dao Duy Phong, former PVP Land chairman; Le Hoa Binh, former chairman of Minh Ngan JSC; Nguyen Thi Kim Thoa, former accountant of Minh Ngan JSC; Thai Kieu Huong, former deputy general director of Vietsan Investment JSC; Dinh Manh Thang, former chairman of Petro Song Da Trading and Investment JSC; and Huynh Nguyen Quoc Duy, a self-employed trader.

PVP Land’s holding in Trans Pacific Service JSC, the parent company of Vietsan, was under the management of Thanh, Sinh, Phong and the late Dang Sy Hung, head of PVP Land economic division.

Thanh was accused of colluding with Duy, Huong, Binh, Thoa and Thang to sign a contract which transferred PVP Land-held shares in Transco JSC at a price equivalent to VND34 million per square meter in the Nam Dan Plaza project.

The payment for the contract led to a differential of over VND87 billion (US$3.8 million). The defendants appropriated a total of VND49 billion from the deal.
