Two people have been killed, while three others from a family in the southern province of Bac Lieu have been left in critical condition after being stung by wasps.
The two boys are still in critical condition
The attacked included two grandmothers and three young grandchildren.
According to initial information, the children were taken care of by their grandmothers as their parents were away from home. On August 14, while the grandmothers were tidying the house, a wasp’s nest on the wall suddenly fell onto the floor. Wasps then stung them and their grandchildren.
The five people were found by their neighbours in critical condition.
They were taken to a local hospital, but one of the grandmothers and a 13-month-old grandchild died there, while two other grandchildren were moved to Can Tho Paediatrics Hospital.
However, because of severe symptoms, the two boys, one aged seven and the other aged five, were taken to HCM City Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Le Vu Phuong Thy from the hospital said that the children were hospitalised in the serious condition with swelling across their whole bodies.
Up to more than 100 bites on each with many being swollen and showing the symptoms of necrosis. They have also faced kidney failure and experienced breathing difficulties.
Dr. Thy said that accidents caused by wasps and bees are often on the rise in summer, when wasps or bees are nearby people should remain still and wait for the insect to leave rather than panic.
It is also necessary to clean houses and the surrounding areas. Beehives and wasps nests need to be removed.
