
The news was announced at a recent conference reviewing science–technology activities and innovation in 2023–2025 at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at HCMC.
The project is being conducted by Associate Prof Do Van Dung, a senior lecturer in the Department of Medical Statistics and Informatics at the Faculty of Public Health, and Associate Prof Nguyen Hoang Bac, Director of HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, in collaboration with Shionogi Co., Ltd (Japan).
Dr. Nguyen Thi Hai Lien, a lecturer in the Department of Health Organization and Management at the Faculty of Public Health, also participates in the research team.
According to the HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the project demonstrates the capacity to connect research with businesses, as well as the ability to transfer scientific knowledge into medical practice.
In the field of innovative startups, scientists from HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy are the authors of six patents and four utility solutions.
A notable example is PhD Truong Cong Tri, lecturer of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology (School of Pharmacy), who holds one exclusive patent and two exclusive utility solution certificates, showing strong potential for commercializing pharmaceutical research outcomes.
Other prominent research projects include the one conducted by Associate Professor Huynh Cong Nhat Nam (Department of Dental Prosthetics, Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology), with a total budget of over VND2.7 billion, which has been completed and accepted.
HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy stated that during the 2023-2025 period, the university recorded strong growth in science and technology activities. In 2023, the school 268 approved research projects. In 2025, the figure increased to 549 . The total scientific research cost over three years reached more than VND54 billion.
Notably, the number of scientific publications increased by 20 percent compared to the previous period, placing HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy among the top five universities nationwide in terms of international publications and at No1 in the medical and pharmaceutical sector.
In general, the university's science, technology, and innovation activities in the 2023–2025 period developed strongly, closely linking research, training, clinical practice, and community service.
The development strategy for science, technology, and innovation for the 2026–2030 period sets a goal to bring HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy into the top 100 leading universities in Asia.
The university has identified eight key tasks: shifting the mindset from treatment to comprehensive healthcare; making technological breakthroughs with AI, precision medicine and 3D printing; mastering medical technologies; promoting interdisciplinary research; focusing on addressing national priority healthcare issues; strengthening technology transfer; expanding international cooperation; and developing high-quality human resources.
