VietNamNet Bridge – The environment police forces of the southern province of Dong Nai on July 31 caught two tractor trucks carrying thousands of liters of hazardous waste, identified as belonging to a company located in the Formosa industrial zone.

According to initial information, the trucks, registered in Dong Nai, carried three blue plastic barrels each. Each barrel contains about 1,000 liters of hazardous waste, which came from a company located in the Formosa industrial zone, part of the Nhon Trach 3 Industrial Park in Nhon Trach District, Dong Nai.

The police have seized the trucks and waste for further investigation.

Colonel Nguyen Van Tho, the spokesman of Dong Nai police agency, on August 1 said that the local police were also investigating a company in Formosa Industrial Zone for discharging untreated waste into the environment.

Earlier, on July 28, Dong Nai environment police agency in coordination with the local Department of Natural Resources and Environment raided Chin Well Fasteners Vietnam Co., Ltd, a foreign-owned firm manufacturing bolts and screws in Formosa Industrial Park and caught red-handed this company using two wastewater discharge pipes.

Of these, one pipe discharged untreated waste into the environment.

The authorities also discovered hundreds of tons of hazardous waste buried within the campus of this firm. The volume of the waste has not been specified.

In 2001, Hung Nghiep Formosa Company Limited leased land in Nhon Trach 3 Industrial Zone, in Nhon Trach District, Dong Nai Province to establish its Formosa Industrial Park for a period of 50 years. This zone is home to 18 operating foreign enterprises.

On August 1 Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thuong, deputy director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Dong Nai Province, said that the case was under investigation so the authorities should not provide detailed information..
