Dr Nguyen Tran Viet Tanh, MA, from the Department of General Surgery of the HCM City Children's Hospital No 2, said the patient is a 2-year-old boy from Dong Nai.
The boy has a medical history of suffering from partial hemiparesis seizures and has been treated at hospital since he was seven months old.
Recently, his relatives discovered an abnormal beating mass on his stomach. After examining the mass, doctors prescribed a contrast-enhanced abdominal CT scan. The scan showed that the boy suffered from an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
An abdominal aorta is the body's largest artery, helping to feed abdominal organs. Abdominal aortic aneurysm will put pressure on nearby organs and will cause danger when the aneurysm bursts, causing trauma or massive bleeding. If the situation is serious, the patient will die immediately.
Doctors at the Children's Hospital No 2 worked with the Hospital of HCM City University of Medicine and Pharmacy to conduct immediate surgery on the patient.
The surgical team removed the aneurysm in the abdominal aorta and replaced it with an artificial vascular tube. Thanks to timely intervention and dedicated care, he gradually recovered and has been discharged from the hospital.
According to Tanh, the condition is mostly seen in the elderly and is rarely seen in children. There have been only 30 cases of children suffering from the disease reported worldwide. This is the first case found in children in Vietnam.
