10 practice tests a month

It’s now the busiest time for high school 12th graders, who have to gear up for the high school finals to take place in early June and for the university entrance exams to take place in early July. To prepare for the two most important exams in their lives, students have been trying to attend a series of mock exams to get adapted to the exams.

Nguyen Dieu Linh from the Luong The Vinh High School, complained that she has to attend too many practice tests – the two final and 2 university entrance mock exams organized by the school where she studies, three at the University of Education’s exam preparation center. Besides, Linh intends to register to attend the two mock exams at the University of Technology’s exam preparation center as well.

“I have to attend a lot of practice tests to get familiar to the exams and psychologically prepare for them,” Linh explained.

Linh’s friends also rush to attend mock exams these days. “The mock exams would show how my learning capability is and whether I can pass the real exams,” Tuan, a friend of Linh said.

Tuan not only attends the mock exams at the school, but he has registered to attend all the mock exams to be organized by prestigious exam preparation centers. Especially, as Tuan dreams of studying information technology at the University of Technology, he would surely attend the mock exams to be organized by the school’s exam preparation center.

Having attended two mock exams, Tuan feels secure about his ability and believes that he would pass the national exams. “The questions raised at the mock exams are close to the questions at the real exams. Therefore, if you can solve the questions at the mock exams, you can be sure of success,” he explained.

The mock exams have made families’ budgets scantier. A mother said that his son’s private tutoring classes alone cost nearly 10 million a month. Meanwhile, she has to pay VND3 million more in June on the son’s mock exams at the school and VND4 million on his mock exams at universities’ exam preparation centers.

“However, I don’t regret the money. I am willing to pay as much as he needs. It would be wonderful if he passes the exams,” the mother said.

Traveling 100 kilometers to attend mock exams

The exam preparation centers in Hanoi these days not only receive the students from the city, but from neighboring localities as well.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam, a student from Thai Binh province, has to travel 100 kilometers to Hanoi to attend the 2 mock exams at the Hanoi University of Education. “Hanoi is an education center, where there are best teachers who can best help students by raising the questions close to the real exam questions,” Tam explained why she decided to come to Hanoi.

A man, who introduced himself as the father of Tran Van Binh, said he left the farming works in the home village to go “escort” the son to Hanoi to attend the mock exams at the University of Technology. He said that the trip costs some VND3 million in total; including the bus tickets, the accommodation rents and the meals.
