Many universities in HCMC have said they were looking for lecturers for the new academic year 2016-2017, setting up new requirements on candidates.

In early March, the HCMC University of Technique Education announced it needed lecturers for 27 training majors. Candidates have to have a doctorate, except for candidates for English teaching, who just need to have master’s degree or IELTS at 7.5 or higher.

The school is also seeking lecturers, who not only need to have good professional knowledge, but also have high English skills. The lecturers in heat engineering and automotive technologies, for example, need to have master’s degree at least and graduate from schools in the six English speaking countries, or they need to have IELTS at 7.0 at minimum.

An official of the school’s personnel division said the school received applications from 32 candidates from early March to mid-April.

On April 21, the HCMC Open University announced it was looking for lecturers in 20 training majors. Candidates for information technology, computer science and computer network training majors need to have master’s degree at least, while the candidates for other training majors must have doctorate.

Tong Hao Kiet, head of the personnel division, said that though the ads about the recruitment were posted on many newspapers and other communication channels, the school received 15 applications only, while only 10 could satisfy the requirements. Finally, the school recruited 9 lecturers.

Universities complain that it is difficult to find lecturers nowadays, because many scientists with master’s degrees and doctorates don’t intend to become lecturers, while many master and doctoral degree holders don’t have experience in scientific research.
The HCMC Food Industry University said it was looking for candidates with doctorates for all training majors, with no limitation on the number and age.

The HCMC Economics University on May 6 announced the plan to recruit 11 lecturers for six training majors.

While demand is very high from universities, the supply is short. Nguyen Quoc Khanh from the HCMC Economics University noted it was very difficult to find qualified candidates who can satisfy the school’s requirements.

Agreeing with Khanh, Dang Vu Ngoan, rector of the HCMC Food Industry University, explained that the training of doctors in Vietnam does not aim to produce lecturers.

He noted that the candidates finishing overseas schools have better science skills than those who finish domestic schools.

It is especially difficult to find candidates for information technology, civil engineering, food processing technology and law.

“The people with high qualifications in these majors would rather go to work for big conglomerates and foreign companies to enjoy high salaries, than work as lecturers at universities,” an expert commented.
