According to the General Statistics Office (GSO), 3,000 fire cases occur each year in Vietnam. In 2017, the figure was 4,100 fires, which caused 119 deaths and injured 270, with total damage of VND2 trillion.

The price of an automatic system which can show the exact locations where fire occurs is very high, but the system invented by a group of students from Maritime University has low production costs but features as good as imported products.

“By utilizing SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), we have developed a new fire alarm system that addresses the disadvantages of existing equipment," said Luu Van Thuy, a member of the group.

The price of an automatic system which can show the exact locations where fire occurs is very high, but the system invented by a group of students from Maritime University has low production costs but features as good as imported products.

It took the students six months to develop a fire alarm system using IoT (Internet of Things). In case of fire and explosion, the system will promptly alert, instruct the fire extinguishing team and assist firefighting in the most effective way.

The researchers ran the system on a trial basis to discover and fix errors. Experiments showed that the product can satisfy all requirements and is suitable to medium-scale construction works.

When fire occurs, a module will send an alarm signal to a warning light and siren, and the location where trouble occurs will be shown on a 7-inch touchscreen on the surface of the fire alarm box.

The signals will be sent to sensors for treatment, and warnings in voice will be emitted via loudspeakers.

The group of students also successfully developed an app that can turn a normal computer into a server which will collect real-time data from the central fire alarm box and post information on the internet.

As such, the users of smart devices, including laptops, mobile phones and PCs with internet connection, can supervise and regulate the system.

According to Thuy, with the production cost of VND10 million, the system is cheaper than imports.

The successful development of a fire alarm system using the Internet creates an electronic fire alarm portal that allows operators and authorities to easily control fire and find the quickest way to deal with problems with minimum damages.

Doan Huu Khanh, a lecturer and instructor of the team, commented that the system has some advantages over other products now available in the market.
