Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr, Commander of the US Pacific Command, has thanked the HCM City administration’s assistance in the search for the remains of US servicemen missing in action during the US war in Vietnam.

He had a meeting with Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong on October 27. 

He said the US will press on with humanitarian aid and the settlement of dioxin consequences in Vietnam in the coming time. 

On behalf of the US businesses operating in the southern economic hub of Vietnam, he appreciated the city’s optimal conditions for them to do business. 

Meanwhile, Chairman Phong valued the US’s cooperation in settling post-war consequences. 

He said the countries’ cooperation programmes on Agent Orange/dioxin detoxification and unexploded ordnance clearance and war veterans’ exchanges are humanitarian activities which should be continued to help foster bilateral relations. 

HCM City is taking the lead in enhancing multi-faceted cooperation with the US. It has been chosen to implement many big joint projects of the two countries. 

He pledged that his city will provide the best possible conditions for foreign investments, including those from the US. 

Also on August 27, Harry B. Harris Jr met with executives of the HCM City-based Military Hospital 175. 

Hospital Director Nguyen Hong Son said his infirmary is engaging in the building of a field hospital to join in UN peacekeeping missions. It wants experts of the US army to give advice and support in training personnel to operate the field hospital. 

Speaking highly of Vietnam’s participation in the UN peacekeeping forces, the US admiral vowed favourable conditions for medical experts of the US army to provide professional and language assistance for workers at the field hospital.-VNA
