Motor vehicle sales stood at 21,216 units in September, down 7 per cent against August and 20 per cent against September 2016, according to a recent report from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA).

Passenger cars saw sales of 11,637 units, 8 per cent lower than in August. Year-to-date sales totaled 114,807, 23 per cent lower year-on-year. The number of commercial vehicles sold in the month stood at 7,432, down 7 per cent against August, and in the first nine months were 73,302, down 7 per cent year-on-year. Special purpose vehicle sales in September declined 15 per cent against August, with 942 units, while sales in the first nine months reached 10,141, down 18 per cent year-on-year.

The number of imported completely-built-up (CBU) vehicles in September totaled 6,477, down 2 per cent against August, while the year-to-date figure was 56,530, up 8 per cent year-on-year.

Completely-knocked-down (CKD) vehicle sales in September were 14,739 units, 5 per cent lower than in August, while sales in the first nine months totaled 141,723, an 8 per cent fall year-on-year.

Thaco retained its position at the top of the market with its wide range of vehicles, selling 65,596 units in September. The gap between Thaco and the runner-up, Toyota (43,832), widened, but the latter’s sales saw its market share among VAMA members rise to 23.7 per cent from 20.2 per cent. Ford retained third place.
