A report of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) on the air transport during Tet holiday, from January 26-31, showed that Vietnam’s airlines provided 4,781 flights, carrying 669,000 passengers and 9,400 tons of cargo, an increase of 15.6 percent and 23.6 percent, respectively, compared with the same period of the year before.

The Tan Son Nhat International Airport received 4,208 flights, or 700 flights a day. The going-through output was 593,000 passengers, up by 15 percent, and 3,300 tons of cargo, up by 63 percent.

Vietnam Airlines still was at the No 1 position in the Vietnamese aviation market with 282,898 passengers served, including 107,752 international and 175,146 domestic passengers.

However, if considering domestic passengers, Vietnam Airlines lost its No 1 position to Vietjet Air, a private air carrier.

Vietnam Airlines, the national flag air carrier, unexpectedly lost its Number 1 position in terms of domestic passenger transport during Tet to Vietjet Air. However, it remains a favorite air carrier thanks to high OTP
During the six peak days of 2017 Tet holiday, Vietjet Air carried 209,179 domestic passengers, or 42 percent of total domestic passengers.

While the number of flights and passengers provided on that days increased, the number of canceled or delayed flights decreased, just accounting for 10.1 percent of total flights.

Vietjet Air had no flight canceled during that period, while delayed flights just accounted for 9.5 percent of total 1,687 flights, down by two points compared with last year in the same period.

Vietnam Airlines had 12 flights canceled.

Regarding the cancelations and delays, CAAV said the major reason was the late arrival of aircraft (77.5 percent). It attributed other reasons, including equipment and services at the airports, air traffic control, weather and airline operation.

Bizlive reported that though Vietnam Airlines lags behind Vietjet in the number of domestic passengers served on Tet, it still favored by passengers thanks to high OTP.

The national flag air carrier has an OTP record of 95.1 percent, an increase of 6 points compared to the same period last year, the highest rate so far.

Analysts commented that the competition in the Vietnamese aviation market now is one between Vietnam Airlines, a veteran air carrier with decades of experience, and Vietjet Air, a fledgling private carrier and a ‘rising star’.

In the latest news, Vietjet Air has been approved to list its shares on the HCMC bourse. Antt.vn quoted a report of VCSC as saying that its shares may be priced at VND90,000 per share.
