National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan made the statement while meeting with Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Ivanovna Matviyenko on the sidelines of the 137th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-137) in Saint Petersburg on October 15.

She hoped the two countries’ parliaments will forge coordination within the framework of the IPU, the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting, and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.

Ngan expressed delight at growing ties between Vietnam and Russia through high-level delegation exchanges, including the visit to Vietnam by Chairwoman Matviyenko in February 2017 and the visit to Russia by President Tran Dai Quang in late June and early July this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Vietnam’s central city of Da Nang in November 2017, she noted.

She praised bilateral cooperation in oil and gas and suggested the two sides create more favourable conditions for joint ventures to operate. Vietnam backs Russian projects, Ngan said, calling on the two countries to expand cooperation in other fields such as tourism and culture.

The two countries’ parliaments will step up cooperation in the future, including the enhancement of high-level delegation exchanges and experience sharing in legislative activities as well as coordination to supervise signed cooperation deals, she added.

Chairwoman Matviyenko recognised Vietnam’s active participation in the Eurasian Women’s Forum 2015 and hoped the Southeast Asian country would partake in the forum in September next year.
