Vietnam’s Olympic football team defeated Syria 1-0 in the quarterfinal match of the ongoing Asian Games 2018 (ASIAD) in Indonesia on August 27.

Van Toan scored the only goal, gaining the victory for Vietnam





The only goal was scored in the 108th minute by Van Toan (number 8), who replaced striker Cong Phuong in the 82nd minute.

Vietnam will meet the Republic of Korea in the semifinals at 4 p.m. on August 29. This is the first time Vietnam has entered the semifinals of an ASIAD.

Vietnam played with confidence from the referee’s first whistle. In the 15th minute, Syria attempted a shot but it was saved by Vietnam’s goalkeeper Tien Dung.

Twenty five minutes into the game, Vietnam launched several attacks that could not, however, break through Syria’s strong defence. Vietnam’s Duy Manh got a yellow card in the 28th minute. 

Syria played actively and created several dangerous situations for goalkeeper Tien Dung who managed some amazing saves.

The first half closed after one extra minute, with no goal scored.

Vietnam struck a free-kick saved by the Syrian goalkeeper in the 63rd minute. 

Twenty minutes into the second half, Vietnam appeared to be playing with caution, without any major attacks. In the 78th minute, Vietnam’s Van Hau received a yellow card. 

In the 90th minute plus one, Syria took a corner which was again, neatly saved by goalkeeper Tien Dung.
 
The main game closed with no goal scored, with the teams playing on for extra time.

Vietnam made history with its first entrance into the ASIAD quarter-finals after winning 1- 0 against Bahrain during the last stages of the 16-team knockout round for the men’s football of the ASIAD 2018 in Indonesia on August 23.

The goal, described as “more valuable than gold” by many fans and commentators, was scored by Nguyen Cong Phuong, wearing jersey number 9, in the 88th minute. 

The Asian Games is the world’s second biggest multiple sports event (after the Olympics). This year’s edition, held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, has drawn 16,000 competitors and officials from 45 countries and territories.

The Vietnamese squad faced Syria in the quarterfinal of ASIAD 2018 on August 27 

Right after the Vietnamese Olympic football squad won a ticket to the semifinals of the ongoing Asian Games (ASIAD) 2018 on August 27, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc sent his warm congratulations to them.

The Government leader praised head coach Park Hang-seo, other coaches and all the players for making history by advancing to the group of the best four of the continent for the first time.

In the quarter-final with Syria at ASIAD 2018 in Indonesia on August 27, Van Toan scored the only goal in the 108th minute, helping Vietnam advance to the semifinals.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Ngoc Thien and the radio The Voice of Vietnam have decided to give the team rewards worth 1 billion VND (nearly 43,200 USD) in total.

Also on August 27, Bui Thi Thu Thao bagged the second gold medal for the country at ASIAD 2018 in the women’s long jump with 6.55 metres. She will also receive rewards totaling 450 million VND (over 19,400 USD) from the minister, the Vietnamese sports delegation and Radio the Voice of Vietnam.

Earlier, the female rowing team secured the first gold medal after finishing the women’s lightweight quadruple sculls event in 7 minutes and 01.11 seconds.

Vietnam Airlines to increase flights to Indonesia for football fans

Vietnam Airlines will add three flights to Jakarta on August 29 to carry local fans to Indonesia for the ASIAD semifinal match between the male football teams of Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK), according to the national flag carrier.

The airline will conduct two direct flights to Jakarta from Hanoi and the central city of Da Nang, and add another return flight between Ho Chi Minh City and the Indonesian capital city, raising the total number of flights between the two countries into four. All the flights will use A321 aircraft.

It will also coordinate with several travel companies in Hanoi, Da Nang and HCM City to offer package tours to Indonesia on the day.
