Speaking at the ceremony, An Giang People's Committee Chairman Ho Van Mung said An Giang and Kandal maintain close cooperation in areas including border security and public order, border demarcation and marker planting, trade, agriculture, tourism and culture.
The Khanh Binh-Chrey Thom crossing benefits from its geographical location and transport links and is about 75 kilometers from the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.
In addition to road connections, the area has access to waterways and the potential to connect with the Chau Doc-Can Tho-Soc Trang Expressway. These advantages are expected to drive the development of cross-border trade, logistics and tourism.
An Giang expects the Khanh Binh-Chrey Thom international border crossing to become an important transshipment hub for goods moving from Vietnam's Mekong Delta to Cambodia and other ASEAN markets.
The province aims for the total value of imports and exports through the crossing to reach about $1.2 billion by 2030.
Alongside trade, the operation of the border crossing is expected to support the development of interconnected international tourism routes between An Giang and Cambodia.
It is also expected to promote border economic activities and attract more investors to the An Giang Border Gate Economic Zone.
Mung said the opening carries significance beyond economic development, contributing to stronger cooperation as well as defense, security and border management between Vietnam and Cambodia.
According to An Giang authorities, the two sides should continue close coordination, maintain regular exchanges and promptly address emerging issues.
They should also facilitate entry and exit procedures, import and export activities, and the exchange of goods among border residents.
The crossing is also expected to strengthen security along the border and improve efforts to control and prevent transnational crime, high-tech crime, illegal border crossings, human trafficking and trade fraud.
Kandal Governor Kuoch Chamroeun said Kandal and An Giang now have two pairs of international border crossings: Kaom Samnor-Vinh Xuong and Chrey Thom-Khanh Binh.
The number of people traveling between the two provinces through these crossings was significant in the first nine months of 2026.
Statistics showed that more than 134,000 people entered Cambodia, while more than 129,000 departed Cambodia for Vietnam during the period.
In addition to residents of the two countries, the border crossings also serve international tourists, helping promote exchanges and tourism between the two localities.
