Shortly after Vietnam gained its independence in 1975, the country officially became the 149th member state of the United Nations on September 20, 1977. Becoming an official member of the UN, the biggest international organisation in the world,  ties between Vietnam and the UN have developed significantly.

Over the past 72 years, the UN has kept a leading role in efforts to prevent and solve conflicts, contributing to maintaining peace and developing a world of growth, prosperity and happiness.

Since becoming the 149th member state of the organisation 40 years ago, Vietnam has played a very active role within the UN. These activities have represented the country’s independent and multilateral diplomatic policies.

The UN has praised Vietnam for achieving five out of eight goals of the Millennium Development Goals, such as poverty reduction, education, gender equality and child health.

Vietnam also served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during the 2008-2009 term and assumed the role of Security Council President for the first time in July 2008 and suggested new ways of working within the council. The country also plays a key role in efforts to reform the UN system, including the UN development system.

The country is running for a post on the UN Security Council for the 2020-2010 tenure.

Cooperation between Vietnam and the UN is a typical example of development collaboration among member states of the organisation as well as the role of the UN in bolstering international cooperation.
