On the morning of December 31, at the Party Central Committee headquarters, General Secretary To Lam, head of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption and Negative Phenomena, presided over the 27th meeting of the committee.

Stringent anti-corruption measures yield significant results

In a statement following the meeting, the Central Internal Affairs Commission highlighted intensified efforts in uncovering and addressing corruption and negative phenomena. These efforts have been marked by resolute and humane measures that distinguish between levels of violations while protecting proactive officials acting for the public good.

Over the year, disciplinary actions were taken against 709 party organizations and 24,097 party members.

The Politburo disciplined two former top leaders of the Party and State for violating regulations in their responsibilities and anti-corruption efforts. These actions underscore the Party and State's strict stance and unwavering commitment to combating corruption.

The year also saw the Inspectorate and Audit sectors focus on areas prone to corruption, recovering 104 trillion VND ($4.4 billion) and 40 hectares of land. Administrative action was recommended for 2,065 organizations and 7,836 individuals.

Record prosecution rates for corruption cases

In cases under the Central Steering Committee’s oversight, authorities prosecuted eight new cases involving 29 defendants and added charges against 174 individuals across 13 cases. Investigations concluded for 13 cases involving 449 defendants, leading to 14 trials with 536 defendants convicted.

Nationwide, law enforcement initiated 4,732 new cases with 10,430 defendants for economic crimes, of which 906 cases and 2,068 defendants were directly related to corruption.

Asset recovery efforts also proved fruitful, with nearly 19 trillion VND ($802 million) reclaimed in cases under the Steering Committee’s direction.

Waste prevention linked to anti-corruption efforts

The Steering Committee emphasized integrating waste prevention into anti-corruption measures. This included revising mandates for provincial and central committees to address waste alongside corruption.

Under General Secretary To Lam’s leadership, comprehensive actions targeted stalled projects and financial inefficiencies, including prosecution for cases causing significant state budget losses.

The Politburo issued new ethical standards for Party members, aimed at preventing misconduct at its roots. Concurrently, the government pushed forward with digital transformation and administrative reforms to foster transparency, reduce bureaucracy, and enhance economic growth.

In 2024, 155 cases were escalated to provincial Steering Committees for oversight. Local prosecutors initiated 848 new corruption cases involving 1,884 defendants. Disciplinary actions were taken against 130 leaders and deputies for negligence, with 45 facing criminal charges.
