Fuel prices in Vietnam have been rising sharply.

The government has issued Resolution No. 43 extending the application of preferential import tariffs, environmental protection taxes and value-added tax measures for petroleum products, materials used in petroleum production and aviation fuel.

Resolution 43 extends until Dec. 31, 2026, the application of Government Resolution No. 25 dated April 30, 2026, and Decree No. 72 dated March 9, 2026, concerning preferential import tariffs on petroleum products and materials used in petroleum production.

It also extends until Dec. 31, 2026, the application of National Assembly Resolution No. 19 dated April 12, 2026, covering environmental protection and value-added taxes on petroleum products, petroleum production materials and aviation fuel.

Resolution 43 takes effect from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, 2026.

The special consumption tax on gasoline, however, will continue to be applied in accordance with the 2025 Special Consumption Tax Law No. 66/2025/QH15 and its implementing regulations.

If the effective period of Resolution 43 needs to be shortened or extended to meet socioeconomic development requirements, ensure energy security or stabilize the petroleum market, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will submit its proposal to the Ministry of Finance for consideration and submission to the government for a decision.

Previously, in response to rising global crude oil prices driven by conflict in the Middle East, taxes on petroleum products were reduced to zero through June 30.

Government Resolution No. 34 subsequently extended the exemption from preferential import tariffs, environmental protection taxes and value-added tax on petroleum products through Sept. 30.

The special consumption tax on gasoline resumed on July 1, at 10% for mineral gasoline, 8% for E5 gasoline and 7% for E10 gasoline.

The latest extension is expected to provide relief for millions of Vietnamese consumers and businesses as petroleum prices have risen sharply in recent weeks, adding upward pressure to the prices of goods and services.

During the Sept. 24 fuel price adjustment, the ministries of Industry and Trade and Finance set the maximum retail price of E5RON92 gasoline at VND26,397 ($1) per liter, up VND1,258 from the previous ceiling and VND690 lower than E10RON95-III.

The maximum price of E10RON95-III gasoline was set at VND27,087 ($1.03) per liter, an increase of VND1,451.

The ceiling price for 0.05S diesel rose VND552 to VND30,497 ($1.16) per liter.

The maximum price of 180CST 3.5S fuel oil increased VND276 to VND19,472 ($0.74) per kilogram.
