Việt Nam has improved its water supply infrastructure and made it easier to access clean water in both urban and rural areas over recent decades, said Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Trần Hồng Hà.

Hà made the statement at a meeting held in response to World Water Day 2019 and the launching ceremony for Vietnam International Water Week 2019 on Friday in Hà Nội.

The country has devoted resources to finding water sources to cope with drainage in mountainous area, deal with climate change, and has worked to craft smart measures to maintain and improve the sustainable development of water sources, said Hà.

Vietnam International Water Week began on Friday and will run until next Monday with the theme “Smart initiative for clean water – No one left behind”. Domestic and international experts will share their experience and smart ways to manage water and raise community awareness on using clean water efficiently and effectively.

It is an opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to co-operate with international firms in the clean water sector to speed development, he said.

In a plenary session of the water week, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) will chair a debate in which experts will share their views, experiences and ideas for initiatives to sustainably develop water resources in the face of climate change.

MONRE will also announce a map of national underground water resources.

Việt Nam is the 15th most populous country in the world. Nearly two thirds of its people live along three major river basins: the Hồng (Red), Cửu Long (Mekong) and Đồng Nai rivers.

The water week will also give firms a chance to display technical products in the field of water resources. — VNS
