According to the department, adenovirus can cause illness throughout the year and affects people of all ages. It commonly leads to respiratory infections, including fever, cough, sore throat and a runny nose, as well as conjunctivitis (pink eye) and gastrointestinal disorders.

Most patients experience mild symptoms and recover without complications. However, the illness can become severe in young children, older adults and people with underlying medical conditions or weakened immune systems.

The virus spreads through respiratory secretions, tears, direct contact with infected individuals, or contaminated objects and surfaces.

Health officials noted that adenovirus can spread easily in shared environments such as households, schools, playgrounds and swimming pools if hygiene standards and water treatment are inadequate.

The Disease Prevention Department also emphasized that pink eye (conjunctivitis) can be caused by various factors, with adenovirus being only one possible cause.

The public is strongly advised not to self-diagnose or purchase medication without consulting healthcare professionals.

As summer holidays bring increased travel and more group activities, including classes, playground visits and swimming, opportunities for close contact and disease transmission also rise.

The department urged the public to remain vigilant without becoming alarmed and to follow recommended preventive measures.

Recommended preventive measures

Maintain personal hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and clean water, especially after contact with sick individuals or respiratory secretions. Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

Do not share personal items: Avoid sharing face towels, bath towels, pillows, blankets, eyeglasses, cosmetics or eye drops. Wash personal belongings separately and dry them thoroughly.

Keep the environment clean: Regularly disinfect frequently touched surfaces and maintain proper sanitation of water sources and swimming pools.

Monitor your health: Anyone who develops symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or pink eye should visit a healthcare facility promptly for examination and appropriate treatment.
