Having a displacement of nearly 2,200 tonnes, the ship is fully armed for anti-submarine, anti-surface and anti-aircraft roles.

It was built under a contract signed in September 2013 between the Vietnam People’s Navy and the Gorky shipbuilding yard in Zelenodolsk, Russia, as part of Vietnam-Russia military cooperation. The plant had previously completed two ships of this kind for Vietnam.

The launch ceremony saw the attendance of Prime Minister Ildar Khalikov of the Republic of Tatarstan, a federal subject of Russia.

Gepard – 3.9 weighs about 2 thousand tonnes and carries advanced missile-artillery, aircraft, antisubmarine and radioelectronic weapons, as well as mine and counter-terror weapons.
