Vietnam's rice continues to lead the world in export prices, outpacing other top exporters. The country’s focus on fragrant and high-quality rice is yielding strong results.

According to the Vietnam Food Association, the current price for Vietnamese 5% broken rice stands at $399 per ton. In comparison, Thailand is selling at $354, India at $376, and Pakistan at $355 per ton. This puts Vietnam at the top among the world’s four largest rice exporters.
Preliminary data from the General Department of Customs shows that by August 15, Vietnam had exported nearly 5.88 million tons of rice, earning over $3 billion. The average export price over the past eight months reached approximately $512 per ton.
In addition to maintaining the world’s highest export price, Vietnam has also surpassed Thailand to become the second-largest rice exporter globally. According to the Thai Rice Exporters Association, India topped the first half of the year with 11.68 million tons (up 36.5% year-on-year), followed by Vietnam with 4.72 million tons (up 3.5%), and Thailand with 3.73 million tons (down 27.3%).
Recently, the Prime Minister instructed relevant ministries to seize this opportunity and accelerate rice exports, particularly high-quality and organic rice. The directive includes integrating traceability systems and building a national rice brand to increase added value. The government is also pushing forward a sustainable development project to cultivate one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta by 2030.
Bui Ba Bong, Chairman of the Vietnam Rice Industry Association, stated that the country's rice sector is steadily advancing toward a green and prosperous future.
Specifically, the sector is moving toward environmentally sustainable practices that protect human health and mitigate climate change. To achieve these goals, the industry is adopting smart and precise farming techniques, reducing waste in production inputs, minimizing environmental harm, and significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Bong affirmed, “The project to develop one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta is a pioneering initiative. It paves the way for building a green and prosperous rice sector. In the near future, Vietnam is expected to emerge as a global leader in large-scale green and low-emission rice production.”
