In its Gemini: Southeast Asia 2026 report, published on July 14, Google said Gemini has reached 900 million monthly active users worldwide, serving users in 230 countries and territories and supporting 70 languages.
Across Southeast Asia, Gemini's user base has more than doubled over the past year, making it the fastest-growing Google application ever launched in the region.
According to Sapna Chadha, Google's vice president for Southeast Asia and Vietnam, the report is also the first to examine in detail how people in a specific region use Gemini in their daily lives - from education and work to content creation.
"Southeast Asia is not only keeping pace with the AI revolution but is also helping shape it," Chadha said during the report's launch. "Gemini users here are among the world's most active and highly engaged."
Vietnamese users lead the region in educational use
Between January and March this year, Google surveyed usage across six Southeast Asian markets: Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Vietnam stood out for its strong focus on education.
According to the report, 17% of all prompts submitted by Vietnamese users were related to learning, the highest proportion among the six countries surveyed.
More than 160,000 students use the Gemini Canvas exam preparation tool each month, while teachers generate approximately 55,000 AI-assisted teaching requests every day.
Chadha said Google observed many Vietnamese students using Gemini to prepare for examinations, describing it as one of the clearest examples of AI becoming integrated into everyday life.
Dang Thanh Nga, an education content creator and Google Student Ambassador, said Gemini helps learners analyze complex formulas, identify knowledge gaps and organize revision materials.
However, she emphasized that AI does not replace independent thinking.
"Critical thinking and the final results still come from the students themselves. Gemini simply makes the learning process faster, more efficient and better organized," she said.
Nearly nine in ten prompts are written in Vietnamese
Another notable finding is that 89% of prompts submitted in Vietnam are written in Vietnamese, the highest share in Southeast Asia.
Vietnamese users also make greater use of Gemini's translation and localization features than users in any other market surveyed.
Google believes this reflects Gemini's growing role as a bridge helping individuals and small businesses reach international audiences rather than serving solely as a question-and-answer tool.
Beyond education, Vietnamese users also rely heavily on Gemini for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) tasks.
Approximately 4% of prompts relate to programming, while 5% involve mathematics, placing Vietnam among the region's most active users of AI for technical work.
Google also found that nearly one-third of Vietnamese interactions take place on desktop computers, a higher proportion than the regional average, where smartphones remain the dominant access device.
According to the company, this suggests that many Vietnamese users employ Gemini for more complex, focused tasks that benefit from a desktop working environment.
AI becomes part of daily routines
Across Southeast Asia, nearly three-quarters of Gemini interactions originate from mobile devices.
Users are increasingly communicating with the AI assistant through voice, images and video instead of relying solely on text, while using Gemini as a research assistant, brainstorming partner and content creation tool.
Google said growth is no longer measured only by the number of users.
The frequency of use is also increasing significantly.
Compared with a year earlier, users now return to Gemini around 50% more frequently, while the average number of prompts submitted has doubled, suggesting that generative AI is evolving from an experimental technology into a routine productivity tool for everyday life.
