Vietnam's Ministry of Home Affairs is seeking feedback from ministries and government agencies on proposed public holiday schedules for 2027, including options that could give workers up to 10 consecutive days off for the Lunar New Year and a four-day National Day holiday.

Two Lunar New Year holiday options under consideration

According to the ministry's draft proposal, the first option follows the current legal framework by allocating five official Lunar New Year holidays, including two days before the Lunar New Year and three days after.

Because two weekly rest days fall within the holiday period, public-sector employees and workers would receive substitute days off in accordance with labor regulations.

Under this proposal, the Lunar New Year holiday would last seven consecutive days, from Thursday, February 4, 2027 (the 28th day of the final lunar month in the Year of the Horse) through Wednesday, February 10, 2027 (the fifth day of the Lunar New Year in the Year of the Goat).

The second proposal would allocate one day before the Lunar New Year and four days after, while swapping the working day on Friday, February 12, 2027, with Saturday, February 27, 2027.

If adopted, employees would enjoy 10 consecutive days off, from Friday, February 5 through Sunday, February 14, 2027.

The extended break would include the five statutory Lunar New Year holidays, two substitute holidays, one swapped working day and two regular weekend days.

Four-day National Day holiday proposed

For National Day 2027, the Ministry of Home Affairs has proposed a four-day consecutive holiday, running from Thursday, September 2, through Sunday, September 5, 2027.

In addition to the official National Day holiday on September 2, employees would also receive September 3 as the adjacent holiday, creating a continuous break when combined with the weekend.

The ministry said selecting September 3 would provide greater convenience for workers planning travel and family activities during the holiday period.

For employees in the private sector, employers will decide whether the additional public holiday falls on September 1 or September 3, alongside the mandatory holiday on September 2, in accordance with Vietnam's 2019 Labor Code.

After collecting feedback from relevant ministries and agencies, the Ministry of Home Affairs will finalize the proposal before submitting it to the Prime Minister for consideration and approval.
