Coach Park Hang-seo surprised spectators when he made up to eight substitutes in the initial lineup. Though the visitors took control of the match, they could not break up the hosts’ defense line.
The home team played defensively, they also tried to produce counter-attacks, although their attacks were often repelled quite far from the Vietnamese goal.
In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Park in turn sent in Quang Hai, Van Duc, Hoang Duc and Tien Linh to bring to bear pressure on the home team.
The Vietnamese players performed more coherently than in the first half, but they still failed to penetrate the multi-layered defense line of the home team.
Without scoring a goal, Vietnam accepted sharing points with Singapore in a goalless match though they retained their top place in Group B.
In the last Group B match, Vietnam will take on Myanmar on their home turf, while Singapore will fly to Malaysia to play their hosts on January 3.
A draw can help Vietnam to progress to the semi-finals, but Park said at the press briefing that his players aim to get three points in the next match.

Cancer patient provides compassion and aid for Hanoi patients
For the past 11 years, Lê Huy, 43 years old, and the Tử Tế (Kind) Charity Porridge Team have been providing aid to tens of thousands of cancer patients and those facing difficult circumstances in Hà Nội.
Huy, who serves as the lead of the team established in 2012, explained that the group was named by Venerable Thích Thanh Sơn of the Việt Nam Buddhist Academy "to convey the idea of sharing compassion with those still struggling in life."
The charity group’s members have distributed porridge free of charge to poor patients at K cancer, Bạch Mai, and Saint Paul hospitals in Hà Nội.
In 2022, every Wednesday morning, 300 meals are provided for poor patients at K3-Tân Triều Hospital, and every Sunday, four large pots of hot porridge are distributed free of charge at Saint Paul Hospital and Bạch Mai Hospital, equivalent to 600-800 bowls.
The group always received the support of the sponsors and appreciation from the patients.
The charity group was granted the certificate of “Humanity address” by the HCM City-based UNESCO Centre for Science, Humanities and Community for its contributions to the community in 2013.
Since then, Huy and the team members have maintained activities to affirm that reliable title.
From four members in 2012, the charity group now has more than 50 permanent members who directly participate in activities: buying vegetables and foodstuff, cooking, and distributing meals of porridge and rice for hospital patients.
For many years, the group's activities have been publicised on social networks, with more than 2,000 followers, and regularly received both mental and physical support from kind-hearted people.
The group's gathering area was at Quan Nhân Temple of Nhân Chính Ward, Thanh Xuân District.
The group received help from members and young people to maintain a kitchen for poor patients.
Regardless of rain or shine, the charity team always was on time at the hospitals to bring quality meals to the patients.
When Huy was a director of a joint-stock company, he went through periods of shock and despair when he discovered that he had cancer of the blood. Witnessing those in more difficult circumstances than himself, Huy overcame the disease.
Huy understands that for cancer patients, the most important thing to help them prolong life is optimism.
Tử Tế porridge group was born from that meaning. At first, many people laughed and thought that he would not be able to maintain it for long. However, until now, after 11 years, the group’s members were still working hard, not only helping patients in Hà Nội but coming to remote areas to assist the poor and ethnic minority students.
PAN Group teams up for wetland conservation by restoring 17ha of the melaleuca forest
A workshop to introduce a project on special-use forest plantation in the Láng Sen Wetland Reserve was held by The PAN Group and C.P. Vietnam and IUCN on December 22 in Long An Province.
The project is within the framework of a two-year cooperation agreement between the three parties, implemented from December 2022 to December 2024. The purpose is to increase the coverage of the Melaleuca forest, create habitats for water birds, improve the living environment of aquatic species, and support the plan of the People's Committee of Long An Province to plant special-use and border protection forests in the province during the 2021-25 period.
Láng Sen Wetland Reserve consists of a core zone (1,971 ha) located in the wetlands of the Plain of Reeds and belongs to Vĩnh Lợi, Vĩnh Đại and Vĩnh Châu communes of Tân Hưng District, Long An Province. Láng Sen is recognised as the 7th out of 9 Ramsar sites in Việt Nam under the Ramsar Convention.
It is one of the few remaining natural inland wetlands in the Mekong Delta with different types of geomorphology, creating an extremely diverse and rich wetland ecosystem. With more than 5,000ha of Melaleuca forests, islets, swamps, rivers, and grasslands, Láng Sen is home to 150 species of seasonally inundated vegetation, 148 water-birds species, including the globally threatened sarus crane listed in the World's Red Book and many other rare species.
However, the survey conducted in 2021 shows that the area of special-use forest has decreased by 139.21 hectares compared to 2014, posing an urgent need for the protection and restoration of this natural morphology.
The project aims to plant 340,000 water melaleuca trees on 17 hectares to regenerate part of the dead Melaleuca tree area, stabilize the land, restore habitats, and provide protection against storms and extreme winds. For long-term benefits, the projects will significantly contribute to floodplain habitat restoration for wild animals and plants, biodiversity promotion in the reserve and human habitat protection against natural disasters.
The project called "Special-use forest plantation in the Láng Sen Wetland Reserve" is a key component of The PAN Group's project named "Life from forestry" implemented in 2020, whose goal is to plant 1 million trees within ten years, of which 378,330 trees on about 1300 hectares have been grown. The PAN Group and member companies fund the project in its ecosystem.
Seven pangolins found on coach
Traffic police in the northern central province of Thanh Hoa discovered seven pangolins on a coach on Tuesday.
The vehicle was stopped on National Highway 1A while travelling from HCM City to the northern province of Thai Nguyen.
The pangolins were packed in styrofoam boxes. Two of which belong to the rare yellow pangolin species.
According to the driver, an identified man hired him to transport the boxes from Quang Tri to Ha Nam with a fee of VND300,000 (USD12).
The traffic police immediately contacted Save Vietnam's Wildlife.
Tran Van Truong from Save Vietnam's Wildlife’s rescue force said that the animals were quite weak with skin injuries which may have been the result of being hunted. They were under intensive care.
According to Truong, the illegal transportation of wild animals often increases in Vietnam, particularly involving rare species, as the Lunar New Year or Tet nears. His organisation have rescued 19 illegally-traded pangolins over the past two weeks.

Vietnam affirms role as reliable partner of international community
This year has been an exciting time for Vietnam’s external affairs. It marked the 45th anniversary of Vietnam’s membership of the United Nations (UN), the 60th anniversary of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties, and the 55th anniversary of Vietnam-Cambodia relations. Vietnam has taken on important positions at international and regional forums. This year witnessed numerous visits by Vietnamese leaders to other countries and foreign leaders to Vietnam.
"The United Nations is proud to be a partner of Vietnam," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres during his visit to Vietnam on October 21 marking the 45th anniversary of Vietnam's UN membership, adding that Vietnam is one of the most dynamic and active members of the UN. President of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid emphasised that Vietnam is a model of the UN, which makes significant contributions to consolidating multilateralism and participation in UN affairs.
The trust of the international community in Vietnam has been reflected by the votes cast for important positions at the largest multilateral forum. On June 13, Vietnam was elected as one of the Vice Presidents of the UN General Assembly's 77th session, representing the Asia-Pacific region. On October 11, it was elected to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the second time for the 2023-2025 tenure. According to Indonesian journalist Veeramalla Anjaiah, who is also a senior researcher from the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), this is a recognition of Vietnam's commitment to respecting and protecting human rights. UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis said Vietnam's election to the council presents both a great responsibility and an important opportunity to redouble efforts in protecting and promoting economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights in line with international human rights standards.
At the regional level, Vietnam continues to promote its role as an important member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Uch Leang, Deputy Director of the Department of Asian, African and Middle-Eastern Studies under the International Relations Institute of Cambodia (IRIC), said Vietnam has always been an active and responsible member of ASEAN and coordinated with Cambodia to contribute to the success of the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and related summits.
After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam's bilateral diplomatic activities have resumed with a series of high-level visits. Vietnamese leaders have made many foreign trips, contributing to promoting bilateral relations and effectively bringing into play the foreign policy of multilateralisation and diversification and the advocation of being friends with all countries.
Noteworthy is Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's official visit to China at the end of October. He was the first foreign leader welcomed by China following the Communist Party of China’s 20th National Congress. Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam Xiong Bo described the visit as a demonstration of the special importance of the relations between the two Parties and countries and sending out a clear message that the two sides will strengthen solidarity and cooperation, and persist the path to socialism.
The year 2022 also marked a special milestone in the relationship between Vietnam and its two neighbours, Laos and Cambodia. A range of delegation exchanges at all levels, along with economic and cultural activities, and mutual support at international and regional forums demonstrated that Vietnam and the two neighbouring countries are fostering their good traditions that have been built up over the past time.

Speaking at the event, Spahn said the US welcomes Vietnam to its global network as the 143rd country partner of the Peace Corps programme. She asked the US volunteers and teachers to work closely together to inspire future generations.
Deputy head of the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training’s Department of International Cooperation Nguyen Tien Dung said Vietnam has a population of over 100 million people, with about 17.5 million students.
Vietnam’s education sector gives priority to teaching and learning foreign languages, including English, so the programme holds significance to education in Vietnam, he said.

PM hosts historical witnesses from People’s Public Security force
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on December 30 had a meeting with historical witnesses from the People’s Public Security force, who directly engaged in the struggle against sabotage war and espionage activities during the resistance war against the US.
Colonel, Hero of the People's Armed Forces of Vietnam Nguyen Tri Phuong, who is former Director of the provincial Public Security Department of Quang Binh province, and Major General Trinh Xuan Thu, former Director of the Public Security Department of Thanh Hoa province, recalled memories during the struggle against sabotage war and espionage activities during the resistance war against the US.
Addressing the meeting, PM Chinh highlighted the strong performance of the People’s Public Security force over the past 77 years, winning trust from the Party, State and people.
He underlined the contributions and sacrifice by public security officers and soldiers to the success of the struggle, contributing to the victory of the revolution for the national liberation and reunification under the leadership of the Party.
The PM noted that in more than 10 years from 1961 to 1972, Vietnam, with the core role played by the People’s Public Security force, detected and arrested hundreds of spy and commando teams.
With the bravery, wisdom and ingenuity and a strong spirit of overcoming difficulties, the People's Public Security force won this arduous battlefield, contributing to the bankruptcy of the enemy's espionage war, he said.
Inheriting and promoting this glorious tradition, the People’s Public Security force has continued to make important contributions to the national construction and defence, fulfilling all assigned tasks, monitoring the situation to avoid being inactive in any circumstances, and actively engaging in preventing and combating corruption, wastefulness and negative phenomena, he said.
The Party and State highly appreciate, recognise and are proud of the great achievements of the People’s Public Security force through periods, he affirmed.

The remains were found by the search team of Vietnam's Military Region 2 in the Lao province of Luang Prabang in their first searching mission during the 2022 - 2023 dry season. Those four fallen soldiers have not been identified.
Speaking at the memorial ceremony, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Vu A Bang said that the solidarity and bonds between the two peoples of Vietnam and Laos have lasted for decades, especially in the revolutionary struggle against their common enemy.
The great dedication and sacrifice of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts in Laos have become a shining symbol of revolutionary heroism and the aspiration for independence, freedom, and happiness.
According to the Military Region 2, the search team found 10 sets of remains in northern Laos during the trip. The six other sets of remains have been identified, and have been returned to their families for burial according to the local customs and their families’ wishes.
Vietnamese women's participation in UN peacekeeping operations impressive: former UNDP Resident Representative
Vietnam has recorded an impressive percentage of women in UN peacekeeping operations, said Caitlin Wiesen, former Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam.
Since the Women, Peace and Security Agenda – an expanded framework towards women’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations – was officially approved in 2000, Vietnam has ensured women’s engagement in peace processes, she added.
Together with the UN, the Vietnamese Government organised a conference on women, peace and security in 2000. The same year, the National Assembly adopted Resolution No. 130/2020/QH14 on Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations, covering the gender issue.
The UNDP has supported Vietnam in various activities, helping the country improve the capacity of its peacekeeping forces. Notably, the UNDP and the Ministry of National Defence co-organised an international conference on women’s role and COVID-19 prevention and control in peacekeeping operations in 2020.
The two sides also jointly held another international conference on women and UN peacekeeping operations in November 2022, on the occasion of the visit to Vietnam by UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
The event looked into how to create a firm foundation to enhance women’s engagement and improve their leadership capacity in peacekeeping activities. It has been seen as a step towards the establishment of a peacekeeping centre of the regional level in Vietnam.
The 2028 target for women serving in military contingents is 15%, and 25% for military observers and staff officers, which Wiesen said is feasible for Vietnam once the country carries forwards its achievements.
Community-based protection promotes forest conservation
Community-based forest protection has helped improve the management and conservation of large areas of natural forest as it promotes the role and responsibility of local people on 7,833ha in Quang Nam and Thua Thien Hue provinces.

The project, worth 1.73 million SEK (Swedish Krona) or 1.67 million, also helped improve the income of communities in Dong Giang district, while expanding the forest for the grey-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix cinerea) – a critically endangered primate species – in Tam My Tay commune in Quang Nam province.
He added the project also offered a livelihood for 1,480 households living near primary forest by boosting forest farms and sustainable forest product exploitation.
A 3-ha pilot farm of black saffron (Curcuma zedoaria) and a 50-ha rattan farm was developed by the Co Tu ethnic group in the villages of But Tua, Bh Lo Ben, A Roch and A Lieng in A Tinh and Song Kon communes in Quang Nam province.

In the context of limited information about Sri Lanka in Vietnam, one of the useful ways to promote mutual understanding between the two countries is cooperation in publication, he said, adding that the special edition on Sri Lanka is intended to develop effective and practical bilateral relations between Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
The journal first published a special edition on Sri Lanka in 2021, providing information about the country and people.
