The conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services of wetlands (Ramsar sites) has contributed to sustainable socio-economic development, carbon storage, climate change adaptation, environmental protection, and nature and biodiversity preservation.

Dr. Du Van Toan from the Institute of Environmental Science, Seas and Islands under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, said that mangroves are considered as a highly productive ecosystem in tropical and subtropical coastal areas globally, contributing 50% of materials to the ocean from materials in the forest and 15% of the total organic matter in marine sediments.

The function of storing organic carbon of wetlands plays an important role in the global carbon stocks and mitigation of climate change impacts, Toan said, stressing the need to conduct research to provide policies and orientations on mangrove conservation and assessment of carbon stocks.

According to the expert, with an area of about 150,000 hectares of mangrove forests and the current estimated price of 5 USD per tonne of carbon dioxide, the benefits from trading carbon credits are huge. More importantly, if they are exploited effectively, there will be a large source of funds to increase income for the community and, at the same time, contribute significantly to forest protection and development in Vietnam.

In addition, in order to fulfill commitments to and join the international community in reducing carbon emissions, it is necessary to have orientations on mangrove conservation and assessment of carbon stocks in mangrove ecosystems in the coming time.

Accordingly, Vietnam needs to develop a national policy on operating a carbon credit exchange; and make legal documents on economic valuation of carbon sequestration and storage functions of mangrove forests.  It is also necessary for the nation to actively participate in and implement conventions on emission, deforestation and forest degradation reduction to enhance its position in the international arena; participate in and contribute to major international initiatives on mangrove restoration; and develop basic surveys on assessment, and calculation of carbon stocks in mangrove ecosystems.

Vietnam became a member of the Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention, in 1989. So far, nine wetlands, with a total area of 120,549 hectares in the country have been recognised as Ramsar sites – wetlands of international importance. They are Xuan Thuy National Park (recognised in 1989), Bau Sau Wetlands and Seasonal Floodplains (2005), Ba Be National Park (2011), Tram Chim National Park (2012), Ca Mau Cape National Park (2013), Con Dao National Park (2014), Lang Sen Wetland Reserve (2015), U Minh Thuong National Park (2016), and Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve (2017).

By now, a network of Vietnamese Ramsar sites has been set up and operated at the website https://vran.vn/.

To effectively implement the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat, Vietnam will prioritise perfecting mechanisms and policies related to the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.

Artists help Vietnamese circus win global respect

With their love for the circus, tireless efforts, and unceasing creativity, artists of Vietnam have made their names known around the world.

In early February, Giang Quoc Co and his younger brother Giang Quoc Nghiep set a new world record by performing a head-to-head balancing act blindfolded in Milan, Italy.

They walked a 40cm-wide and 10m-long surface and climbed up and down 10 steps in 1 minute and 55 seconds. That has made the duo the only in Vietnam to hold four world records.

Earlier, the two had been assisted by the Ho Chi Minh City circus troupe, now the Phuong Nam Arts Theatre, to take part in many international competitions in such countries as China, Italy, and Cuba and continually won prizes, according to the Tuoi tre (Youth) newspaper.

They said those events were wonderful chances for them to learn experience from international artists, realise their weaknesses to improve their skills, and impress major circus troupes in the world.

As a result, the brothers have been invited to perform in many countries like the US, Spain, and Germany.

Nghiep said that to grab global attention, it is necessary to make a difference and create uniqueness. To do that, the first factor is talent with unique acts that are like no other, and another is to bring into play traditional culture as seen in their specially designed “ao dai” – a traditional costume of Vietnam.

Meritorious Artist Bich Lien, Deputy Director of the Phuong Nam Arts Theatre, said Co and Nghiep have made enormous efforts to shine, adding that they have been working industriously, passionately, and creatively while popularising their images well to leave impression in Vietnam and the world.

Aside from the pair, other artists have also been applying themselves to the circus and gained achievements.

Late last year, the Vietnam Circus Federation won two awards at competitions in Russia.

Chu Hong Thuy and Pham Thi Huong won a gold prize for their “Du Son” (Red Swing) performance at the Circus Princess festival, which attracted more than 100 female artists from 10 countries.

Notably, there were only two gold prizes at the contest, and the other belonged to a Russian artist.

Meanwhile, Chu Khanh Huyen reaped a bronze award at the “Without Borders” international circus festival. The event drew the participation of more than 120 artists from 15 countries and featured two gold prizes, three silvers, and four bronzes.

Tong Toan Thang, Director of the Vietnam Circus Federation, said artists have kept training even amid the COVID-19 pandemic to sustain their performance.

He held that Vietnamese artists can gain more international prizes if they receive more investment, expressing his hope for stronger assistance from state agencies so that artists can take part in international festivals and competitions.

Aquaculture towards large commodity production

To deploy a national plan on aquaculture development in the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2045, in August 2022, the Prime Minister approved a national programme for aquaculture development in the 2021-2030 period.

The objective is to develop effective and sustainable aquaculture while proactively adapting to climate change; improve productivity, quality, value and competitiveness of aquatic products; and meet the requirements of domestic and export markets, the Nhan dan newspaper reported.

In addition to the above overall goals, the national programme for aquaculture development in the 2021-2030 period also set out many specific goals: By 2030, aquaculture production should reach 7 million tonnes with export revenue of 12 billion USD per year, while the growth rate of aquaculture value is expected to reach an average of more than 4.5% a year. Specifically, in the next eight years, more than 50 aquaculture areas and concentrated seed production areas will receive investment while essential infrastructure will be upgraded to meet production requirements.

Over the years, Vietnam has built a value chain of pangasius. So far, it has been effective and has set the goal that by 2030, Vietnam will actively produce and supply more than 70% of the demand for tiger prawn and whiteleg shrimp and 100% selected brood stock; at the same time, it will improve the quality of breeding aquatic species with high economic value and large volume of commodity products.

Vietnam has also invested in upgrading aquaculture infrastructure, at the same time developing production systems, supplying materials and aquaculture supporting industries.

Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is developing a decree on a number of policies on fisheries development, according to which mechanisms and policies on infrastructure investment in seed production and aquaculture development. The central budget will invest 100% of funds for building essential infrastructure in concentrated aquaculture areas, marine aquaculture areas, and concentrated aquatic seed production areas for marine aquaculture.

The national programme for aquaculture development in the 2021-2030 period is clearly an important step to develop from small-scale fisheries to large, sustainable commodity production and an indispensable trend when Vietnam is aiming to be one of the leading seafood production and processing centres in the region and world.

Overcoming numerous challenges, 2022 was the second year in which Vietnam's seafood industry implemented this programme, with many positive signals, as all targets have exceeded the set level. In particular, the export value reached a record level in history - reaching the milestone of nearly 11 billion USD, up 23.8% over the same period in 2021.

To date, the marine farming area has reached about 9 million m³ in cages, while aquaculture production has reached 5.19 million tonnes, an increase of 7% compared to 2021 and also an all-time record high.
