The Criminal Police of Vietnam in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea (RoK) are completing procedures to transfer a wanted criminal to the RoK police.
Kim Jin Ki, 66, has been hunted for fraudulent behaviour in the RoK after stealing an amount totaling KRW150 billion, equivalent to over US$122 million.
According to the Korean police, after being discovered in his homeland, the criminal entered Vietnam in 2020.
While in Vietnam, Kim constantly changed his places of residence in a bid to conceal his whereabouts.
However, he was arrested in an apartment in Me Tri ward of Nam Tu Liem district on March 27.
Hailstones damage crops in Lam Dong
Heavy hailstones rained down in Da Lat resort city of the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on March 27, causing huge damage to vegetable and flower cultivation areas, and flooding in some residential areas.
Preliminary statistics of the locality show that the natural phenomenon concentrated in the downtown of Da Lat where the cultivation area is mainly in greenhouses.
After the rain, the ice formed into patches, affecting some greenhouse areas and outdoor vegetable and flower gardens.
The heavy rain lasting for many hours also caused flooding in low-lying zones, a number of residential areas and stream-side roads.
According to the Steering Committee on Disaster Prevention and Control, and Search and Rescue of Lam Dong province, thunderstorms also occurred in some areas of Lam Ha district and Da Lat city the same day.

Tickets for Japan-Vietnam match in World Cup qualifiers sold out
All the 60,000 tickets of a match between Japan and Vietnam in the World Cup 2022 Asian qualifiers have been sold out.
Of the total, around 3,000 tickets are for Vietnamese football fans, according to the host country’s organising committee.
Spectators are asked to follow Japan’s COVID-19 prevention and control measures for the March 29 match. Violators may be asked to leave the 60,000-seat Saitama Stadium.
As planned, the Vietnamese team will have a training on March 28 afternoon to get familiar with the ground.
Vietnam lost 0-1 to Japan in the first leg which took place at Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium on November 11.
Ly Hoang Nam finishes second at M25 Toulouse-Balma
Vietnamese tennis player Ly Hoang Nam lost two sets to French opponent Kenny De Schepper in the final clash of the M25 Toulouse-Balma in France on March 27 evening.
Hoang Nam tried to show his best, but quickly conceded defeat to the 2.03m tall player in both sets with the same score of 3-6.
His defeat is not surprising as the French host player once rose to 64th in the world, and competed at many of international tennis tournaments, from Grand Slam to Masters 1,000.
The Vietnamese No1 player accepted the runner-up position and had 12 more points on the rankings. He is expected to return to the top 500 in the world next week.
Hoang Nam will soon travel to Thailand to attend two M15 Chiang Rai tournaments scheduled to take place from April 4-17, to prepare for the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).
He is the gold medalist in the men’s singles at the SEA Games.
Thanh, Hoa win national Tien Phong Marathon titles
Hoàng Nguyên Thanh defended his title while Hoàng Thị Ngọc Hoa was back to her best at the national Tiền Phong Newspaper Marathon organised in Côn Đảo Island, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province on Sunday.
Thanh, who has dominated marathons for three years since he returned to running in 2019, had no problems defending his top position in the men's full marathon (42km), finishing with a time of 2hr 41min.
It was his third championship trophy although he could not beat his personal best of 2:26.55 set last year when the tournament was held in Gia Lai.
Next year, the tournament which is the national oldest event will be hosted by Lai Chau Province.
HCM City plans underground road to expand, beautify downtown space
An underground space including a four-lane road connecting downtown HCM City with the Thủ Thiêm New Urban Area is being planned by the municipal Department of Planning Architecture.
The department says the underground space will also include two basement floors with public parking lots for around 300 cars.
A pedestrian walkway and tram lines will be built on the surface area around Bạch Đằng Wharf Park located along the Sài Gòn River bank.
Beneath the Mê Linh Roundabout will be a garden, coffee shops, restaurants and retail stores.
The area will be connected to an underground parking lot beneath Tôn Đức Thắng Street.
On the above-ground area of Mê Linh Roundabout, a “cool” space will be created for visitors.
Between the Mê Linh Roundabout and Sài Gòn River bank, there will be three public bus stations and a LTR (Light Rail Transit) station that could be built underground, as also a water bus station.
VNĐ4.7 trillion for repairs requested by Vietnam Railways Corporation
The Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) has requested the Ministry of Transport allocate VNĐ4.76 trillion (US$207 million) to repair and upgrade tunnels and bridges in its railways.
There are currently 28 degraded tunnels that have severely affected trains and railways. These include 22 tunnels on the Hà Nội - HCM City line built around 1935.
Earlier plans, which cost around VNĐ7 trillion aimed to repair 9 of the 22 tunnels but the VNR is petitioning for the remaining 13 tunnels to be refurbished with a total fund of VNĐ1.9 billion.
The VNR also asked for VNĐ1.16 trillion to better ensure safety to repair 26 curves and eliminate rockfall threats in 14 locations.
The remaining 1.7 trillion is allocated to repair and replace 87 dangerous bridges as well as the construction of road-railway separation for Lục Nam, Long Đại and Phố Lu bridges.
MoU signed to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment in VN
Roche Pharma Vietnam and the HCM City Oncology Hospital (HOH) signed an MoU to improve the hospital‘s professional capacity of medical staff and strengthen cooperation with domestic and foreign oncology organisations and experts.
The MoU aims to improve diagnostic and therapeutic capacity, treatment and patient support while also carrying out exchange of experiences among international organisations, implementation of key projects on breast and liver cancer, and the building a database for the treatment and care of patients.
Previously, Roche Vietnam and HOH jointly implemented a project on “Enhancing access to advanced therapies for high-risk breast cancer patients in 2020-2025” at the hospital level.
In 2021, HOH carried out a series of breast cancer awareness-raising programmes for the community, coupled with screenings for women over 40 and others in high-risk groups.
The project also included training and professional development programmes for multimodality treatment of breast cancer and strengthening the clinical research capacity at the hospital.
109 hectares of land for social housing construction
The Department of Construction has recently reported to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City on the housing development in the first quarter of 2022 and the plans for 2021, 2022, and the period of 2021-2025. Noticeably, it includes the land fund for the construction of social housing.
Through the review, 33 commercial housing investment projects with an area of over 10 hectares, required to set aside land for social housing with a planning area of 1,651 hectares, have an area of 109 hectares for social housing with a scale of 70,000 apartments. Fourteen projects have completed compensation and site clearance with a planning area of 435ha and an area of 32 hectares for social housing construction with 15,000 units.
The Department of Construction also worked with five investors, listened to their difficulties, and proposed solutions to remove obstacles to accelerate social housing construction in commercial housing projects that the investors have been implementing.
National Tourism Year 2022 kicks off in Quang Nam
Vietnam has become a bright spot on the world tourism map, recognized by the international community with many world’s top awards.
The National Tourism Year 2022 themed “Quang Nam - A green tourism destination” kicked off on March 26 in Hoi An Ancient Town, the central province of Quang Nam.
A series of tourism events throughout the year are expected to lay the platform for the tourism industry to accelerate the recovery process after two years of struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the opening ceremony of the National Tourism Year 2022 marks the resumption of Vietnam’s tourism activities and is a key event of the 2022 National Tourism Year Program.
The Prime Minister stated tourism is not only an important economic sector but also promotes development cooperation, cultural exchange, international integration, friendship building, and peace.
Vietnam urged to update smart grid for network reliability
Increasing electricity demand required by the fast-growing economy forces Vietnam to be hurried in upgrading smart grid indexes.
Vietnam should take measures on eight Smart Grid indexes (SGIs) in updating its roadmap to ensure the sustainability of the country’s electricity grid network.
The indicators are green energy, energy market, supply reliability, data analytics, monitoring and control, customer satisfaction, cybersecurity, and integration of distributed energy resources.
Those recommendations were presented by both Vietnamese and German experts who joined a series of conferences on the topic co-hosted by the Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
Trade value posts double-digit growth in first half of March
Viet Nam's trade with the rest of the world reached US$30.55 billion in the first half of March, an increase of 12.7 percent against the second half of the previous month, official data shows.
The above figure raised the total trade volume from the beginning of this year to over US$140 billion, up 14.3 percent on year, the General Department of Customs reported Friday.
The foreign-invested sector accounted for nearly 70 percent of the trade volume, or US$97.45 billion, up 11.8 percent.
In the first half of March, export turnover of mobiles and spare parts grew by US$596 million (or 27.2%), furniture up by US$ 88 million, and crude oil up by US$ 61 million.
Meanwhile, import volume of computers, electronic products rose by US$ 568 million, machines and equipment up by US$ 282 million, fabrics up by US$ 228 million.
Full-time legislators convene meeting to talk draft laws
The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee opened a meeting of full-time deputies on March 28 to discuss four draft laws to be submitted to the coming third session of the parliament.
Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong attended the event, the first of its kind in the 15th tenure.
In his opening remarks, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue said the meeting focuses on a draft law amending and supplementing some articles of the Law on Intellectual Property, the draft revised Law on Emulation and Commendation, the draft revised Law on Cinematography, and the draft revised Law on Insurance Business.
The thorough preparation of the bills before they are submitted to the NA for approval is to guarantee their highest quality and save the time of the parliament’s coming session, he noted.
The top legislator also pointed out some major issues of the drafts that need the lawmakers’ opinions.
The meeting is held both in person and via videoconference and will last for two days.
Vietnam, Uzbekistan to meet again at Dubai Cup U23 tournament
Vietnam’s U23 football team will play Uzbekistan on March 29 in the third round of the Dubai Cup 2022 friendly tournament, according to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
In the Vietnamese U-23 team's history of matches with Uzbekistan, their best outcomes were a 1-1 tie in a friendly ahead of the VFF Cup 2021 and a 0-0 draw also in a friendly match in 2015 before the U23 Asian Cup qualification round in 2016.
Most recently, Vietnam came second at the AFC U23 Asian Championship 2018 after losing 2-1 to Uzbekistan. At this tournament, coach Park Hang-seo and his players showed their strong fighting spirit.
Earlier, the Vietnamese U-23 squad tied goalless with Iraq in the team’s first match at the Dubai Cup 2022 and lost 1-0 to Croatia in the second match.
The Dubai Cup 2022 is a friendly tournament with the participation of ten football teams from Asia and Europe, including Uzbekistan, China, Saudi Arabia, Japan and host the UAE. Each team will play three matches throughout the tourney, which is taking place from March 23-29.
Outstanding paintings, sculptures of Vietnamese artists to be displayed at "New Days" art exhibition
More than 30 outstanding artworks of eight famous Vietnamese painters and sculptors will be exhibited at the Vietnam University of Fine Art in Hanoi from April 2-8.
The exhibition, entitled "New Days", is organised by indochineart.vn (Indochine Art), a Vietnamese organisation specialising in evaluating, creating and commercialising original artworks, to celebrate the 5th anniversary of its establishment and development.
Works on display at the exhibition are created from various materials such as lacquer, oil paint, synthetic, stone, iron, stainless steel, and mica.
Vietnam strives to complete final preparations for successful hosting of SEA Games 31
Only less than 50 days left, the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) will officially take place. At present, Vietnam is urgently making efforts to complete the final preparations for the safe and successful organisation of the region’s biggest sport event.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, SEA Games 31 could not take place as planned in November 2021, and was postponed to May 2022. The organising committee encountered many difficulties in preparations, while athletes did not have opportunities to compete regularly and have training abroad.
The goal of successfully holding the Games is an important task. Thanks to the close direction of the Government, the companionship and coordination between the concerned ministries and sectors, the preparations are on the right track, with the progress ensured. Tens of thousands people nationwide join Olympic Run Day events
The Olympic Run Day for Public Health was observed nationwide in celebration of the 76th Vietnam Sports Day (March 27) and towards the 31st Southeast Asia Games (SEA Games 31) in May.
The Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports on March 27 launched the “All people take exercises following the example of great Uncle Ho" campaign and the Olympic Run Day in the city, with more than 600 runners.
On the same day, over 6,000 people joined a run in Ho Chi Minh City. Besides professional runners, officials from local governmental bodies, members of the armed forces, residents and students in the city also participated in the event.
The Olympic Run Day for Public Health was held in the central city of Da Nang on March 27, seeing the participation of more than 1,500 runners.
The ninth edition of the city’s mountain running tournament also took place on the day. The events were to celebrate the city’s 47th Liberation (March 29) and the Vietnam Sports Day.
Young people to have their say at national policy forum on Mar. 30
A national policy forum for young people will take place at the National Assembly building in Hanoi on March 30, organisers said at a press briefing on March 28.
The gathering, they said, will present a chance for young people to share their aspirations and make recommendations on vocational training to State agencies to meet the country’s development requirements in the current period.
It will also help raise the awareness of young people and the entire society about vocational training policy in the context of the complicated nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and the strong development of science – technology.
The forum will be attended by policymakers, experts, scientists, and representatives of businesses, vocational training institutions and international organizations.
Activities celebrate Vietnam Ethnic Groups’ Cultural Day
A wide variety of unique cultural activities are due to be held between April 16 and April 19 at the National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism on the outskirts of Hanoi in order to celebrate the Vietnam Ethnic Groups’ Cultural Day on April 19.
The event will see a forum held on ethnic culture along with a photo exhibition aimed at introducing a range of unique different cultures among various ethnic groups across the country.
Major festivals and customs of ethnic groups will be re-enacted, including the Le cap sac (maturity ritual) of the Dao ethnic people, the new rice ritual of the Jrai ethnic group, the Central Highlands region’s gong performance, and the Chol Chnam Thmay festival of the Khmer community.
Art performances highlighting the various cultures of Vietnamese ethnic groups will also take place during the four-day event.
VN win five golds to top regional karate championships
Việt Nam topped the ninth Southeast Asian Karate Championship, which closed in Cambodia on Sunday.
After five days of competition in Phnom Penh, Vietnamese athletes won five golds, five silvers, and three bronze.
There were four winners in kumite (combat) including Asian champion Hoàng Thị Mỹ Tâm (women’s U55kg), former world silver medalist Nguyễn Thị Ngoan (women’s U61kg), SEA Games champion Hồ Thị Thu Hiền (women’s U68kg) and Trần Lê Tấn Đạt (men’s over84kg), and one in kata (performance) for the senior female Team.
Indonesia (five golds, three silvers, six bronzes) and Malaysia (five golds, three silvers, four bronzes) came second and third, respectively.
At the Southeast Asian Karate Conference on March 23, Vũ Sơn Hà, head of Karate Section of the Việt Nam Sports Administration, was voted President of the Southeast Asian Karate Federation for 2022-26. It is the first time Việt Nam has had an office at the top position of the regional federation.
Karate will hold 15 categories of both kumite and kata at the Ninh Bình Province Gymnasium from May 16-20. Việt Nam will send 28 athletes, aiming for at least four gold medals.
National modeling reality TV show opens in HCM City
The fourth season of modelling reality TV show The Face Vietnam has opened in HCM City.
Thousands of contestants, female and male, are expected to participate in the show’s qualifying round held in the city and Hà Nội.
Fifteen best contestants will be chosen for the final round held in the city next month.
During the final round, they will be coached by the show’s chief mentors as well as local and foreign fashion industry insiders to compete for The Face Vietnam title.
This year, the show brings together Vietnamese models and actresses Anh Thư and Vũ Thu Phương as mentors.
Ministry of Health pushes for more thorough food inspections
The Ministry of Health (MOH) has ordered food production facilities and food services to be fully inspected, in accordance with the "National Action Month for Food Safety" from April 15 to May 15.
The 2022 National Action Month's motto is "Better focus on the role and duty of food producers in the new era."
In recent years, food safety management has transitioned to risk management, from pre-production inspection to post-production, especially in agricultural products.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has worked with regions to foster the development of safe food production areas, but there are still struggles.
Smaller food producers have not been able to apply new technologies in production.
Tourist drowns at Danang beach
A tourist has been found dead after his group of five people were washed away while swimming at a beach in Danang City.
According to a report from Son Tra Peninsula and Danang Tourism Beaches Management Board, the group went to bathe at Pham Van Dong Beach and were washed away in strong waves at around 7 pm on Sunday. A woman who was also swimming at the beach at that time rushed to shore to call for help.
However, the rescue team at the beach stopped working at 6.30 pm. They had warned visitors to leave the beach earlier.
Fortunately, a member of the team, Nguyen Huu Toan Chung, was still at the beach. He managed to save four victims including three women and a man. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man remained missing. Chung called his team to search for the missing man. But they only found the body of the man at 11.30 pm the same day.
The Son Tra Peninsula and Danang Tourism Beaches Management Board have continued to issue warnings that visitors should not swim at local beaches after 6.30 pm as the rescue team are not available.
Yen Bai grants investment licences worth 1,475 billion VND
The northern province of Yen Bai granted investment licences worth a total of 1,475 billion VND (64.8 million USD) to nine investors at a meeting with enterprises on March 27.
They include a project to manufacture solar panels, an ecotourism project, a shaped aluminium factory, a wood export project and a driving education and testing centre.
In 2021, Yen Bai recorded 330 newly established enterprises, up 15.8% from the previous year.
Enterprises in the province contributed 1,380 billion VND (60.6 million USD) to the state budget and created jobs for 43,600 people with an average income of 5.8 million VND (254 USD) per month.
As of March 15, there were 585 active projects in Yen Bai Province with a total capital of 86,911 billion VND and 465.7 million USD.
Vietnam to vaccinate children aged 5-11 in April
Vietnam will start vaccinating children aged 5 to 11 in the second quarter of April with the vaccines funded by the Government of Australia and the US.
Australia will donate 13.7 million doses of Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines and the US will supply 10 million doses, said Vietnam’s Ministry of Health, adding that both sources are enough for inoculating all children of that age group in Vietnam.
The doses from both donors are estimated to cost VND3.4 trillion (US$148 million).
Regarding the Australian donations, the first shipment of nearly 10 million doses will arrive in Vietnam this week and the second delivery will be made in April.
Vietnam’s vaccine rollout plan for children aged 5-11 was revealed by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in December 2021. In January 2021, the government approved a plan to buy 21.9 million doses of Pfizer vaccine for children.
Vietnam hopes that by vaccinating this age group, the country will soon proceed with the school opening plan. So far, the country has completed inoculating children aged 12-17 and considered injecting vaccines to those aged 3-5.
HCMC to re-establish four field satellite emergency stations
HCMC is set to gather its five existing field satellite emergency stations to divide them into three. Besides, the city surveyed a local Covid field hospital to establish another field satellite emergency station.
The HCMC Health Department and the HCMC 115 Emergency Center yesterday, March 25, visited Covid Field Hospital No.14 in the city’s Tan Phu District to consider setting up a field satellite station there, following the HCMC government’s decision on founding field satellite emergency stations to meet the demand for emergency treatment.
The premises of the stations must be returned, but the 115 Emergency Center does not have enough space to house all of the five stations. The city mapped out a plan to divide the five stations into three and set them up at three local hospitals in District 7 and the districts of Tan Phu and Binh Chanh. The station in the Quang Trung Software City in District 12 will be relocated to the headquarters of the 115 Emergency Center in District 10.
Each station will have 10 ambulances and 165 medical workers. Vehicles of the Phuong Trang and Mai Linh groups will be allocated to these stations.
