The HCM City Department of Transport plans to open three more routes with final destinations at the new Miền Đông (Eastern) Bus Station in Thủ Đức City.

The new routes will meet the travel needs of people to and from the new bus station.

They include two e-bus lines traveling from Vinhomes Grand Park and Việt Nam National University-HCM City in Thủ Đức City, and one route from the old Miền Đông Bus Station in Bình Thạnh District connecting to the new Eastern Bus Station.

The department now oversees nine public bus routes connecting to the new bus station.

The new bus station operates 386 buses serving 2,603 trips a day, according to a recent report of the department.

There are 57 fixed inter-provincial routes from 20 provinces and cities nationwide operating at the new station, with 1,218 buses. However, only 402 buses are operating.

The number of customers traveling to the new station has not been as expected. The fixed passenger transport routes and some transport units reduced their frequency or halted operations due to the moderate number of passengers.

The reasons for the reduction of passengers were the travel habits of the customer along with ineffective communication and information about the new routes.

In addition, the transit operation does not meet all of the demands of customers and the transport infrastructure surrounding the new station has not been completed and is inconvenient for buses connecting with the HCM City – Long Thành – Dầu Giây Expressway.

The department has proposed that the Saigon Transportation Mechanical Corporation (SAMCO), the new bus station's operator, offer discounts on service fees at the new station and support parking for taxis and contracted vehicles.

The new bus station, the country’s largest, was officially put into operation in October 2020 after nearly four years of construction.

Covering 12.3 ha in Thủ Đức and 3.7ha in Bình Dương Province, it is nearly three times as big as the old one in Bình Thạnh District.

It can serve about 21,000 passengers per day with 1,200 buses, and during peak times, 52,000 passengers and over 1,800 buses.

HCM City to provide free annual health checks to all residents

HCM City plans to provide free annual health checks to its populace as part of efforts to reduce people’s medical costs and improve their quality of life.

According to a proposal its Department of Health has submitted to the People’s Committee, all residents will get regular health checks at least once a year by 2025 with priority given to people aged 60 and above.

The check-ups for the seniors could be done at medical facilities, their residential localities or at home, and the records electronically documented and managed for life, the proposal said.

The city has about four million people aged 60 and above, most of whom have high blood pressure, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, according to the department.

Dr Nguyễn Văn Vĩnh Châu, deputy director of the department, said everyone should have equal access to quality healthcare, and good public healthcare plays a prime role in this.

Dr Kiều Xuân Thy, deputy head of the HCM City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, said most people did not pay enough attention to periodic check-ups, leading to severe consequences that affect their quality of life.

Regular checks would identify early signs of health issues and improve the chances of effective intervention, she said. There are many factors such as age, health, family history, and lifestyle choices that determine how often people need check-ups.

Medical experts recommend that healthy people aged 25 and older should be screened at least once a year and twice a year if they have certain chronic conditions.

Ministry of National Defence agrees to upgrade southern military airport for specialised use

The Ministry of National Defence has agreed to upgrade the existing Hớn Quản military airport in the southern province of Bình Phước to convert it into a specialised airport.

Hớn Quản military airport (formerly called Técníc) was built in the colonial period and used during the French resistance war. It is now managed by the local military agency.

Previously, Bình Phước Province’s People’s Committee proposed upgrading the airport for both military and specialised purposes.

The airport will be used for planes carrying people and cargo for special purposes, such as transporting equipment for a hospital, machinery for a construction project and experts and skilled workers to a company or project.

It will be expanded to 400-500 hectares from its current 100ha under the public-private partnership model.

The ministry has asked the province to work closely with relevant agencies to include the airport development plan in the local socio-economic strategy, in accordance with Government Decree No. 42 issued in 2016 on the operation of specialised airports.

A specialised airport is designed for special aviation purposes or passenger and goods transport, rather than common public transportation.

Specialised aircraft are helicopters, seaplanes, small flat-wing aircraft, and unmanned aircraft.

The Ministry of National Defense will collaborate closely with the Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Transport and the province’s government to build the airport’s construction plan.
