The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced it agrees that the 2023 Lunar New Year holiday should be a seven-day break, as was proposed by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

The ministry preferred the option in which State employees have seven days off for the Tết New Year celebration, starting on Friday, January 20, 2023, and ending Thursday, January 26, 2023.

In Việt Nam, the Ministry of Home Affairs is the one responsible for the organisational structure of State administration; local Government organisations, management of administrative boundaries; officials, public servants and State employees; non-Governmental organisations, State archives and State administration of public services.

Early this month, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs presented two options for the new year holiday.

In the second option, the holiday will also span five days, but from January 21 (Saturday) to 25 (Wednesday).

This option would result in two additional days off for the following Thursday and Friday, so people would effectively enjoy a nine-day break.

The proposal is being presented for feedback from ministries and departments, before being submitted to the Prime Minister for approval.

Health ministry and US CDC to strengthen cooperation in dangerous disease prevention

The Vietnamese Ministry of Health hopes the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will continue to assist Việt Nam in the prevention of dangerous diseases such as influenza, COVID-19, zoonotic diseases and HIV/AIDS.

The proposal was made by the Acting Minister of Health Đào Hồng Lan on Tuesday afternoon during a working session with Eric Dziuban, Vietnam Country Director of US CDC.

Lan emphasised that in the past, the US Government, the US Department of Health and the US CDC supported the Vietnamese Government and people with medical equipment and vaccines against COVID-19.

Health cooperation between the two countries has developed well over the past 25 years and the partnership with the US CDC is extremely important, she said.

The health cooperation focuses on various important fields such as infectious disease and HIV/AIDS prevention, nosocomial infection control, antibiotic resistance and strengthening laboratory testing capacity.

The US CDC has been supporting Việt Nam in the global health security programme, field epidemiology training programme, and the establishment and operation of the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the Ministry of Health and at four regional institutes, she said.

US CDC’s support projects and technical assistance have enhanced the efficiency of Việt Nam’s disease prevention and surveillance, especially COVID-19, HIV/AIDS prevention, tuberculosis control, antibiotic resistance and global health security, Lan said.

During the working session, Eric Dziuban highlighted Việt Nam’s achievements in the fight against COVID-19.

In the context that public health landscape is constantly changing, we need to continue our work to ensure Việt Nam is prepared with the best possible foundation. The US CDC is committed to further fostering health cooperation with Việt Nam and realising the common goal which is to strengthen domestic healthcare systems, he said.

The US CDC has provided technical support for Việt Nam in the surveillance, diagnosis and treatment of monkeypox as a globally emerging disease, he said.

Since early June 2022, when monkeypox began to spread globally and continued to be declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization, the US CDC has worked closely with the Vietnamese Ministry of Health to ensure Việt Nam’s readiness in response to this disease.

The US CDC is also providing technical assistance in Việt Nam’s national CDC development plans to further strengthen the country’s healthcare system capacity.

Webinar on sustainable agriculture transformation in Mekong Delta

The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Dutch Embassy in Vietnam held a webinar on sustainable agriculture transformation in the Mekong Delta on September 6.

The Mekong Delta contributes 32% of the agriculture sector’s gross domestic product (GDP). It accounts for half of the country’s rice output, 65% of aquatic products, 70% of fruit, 95% of rice for export and 60% of fish for export. It also provides input materials for industrialisation and modernisation.

A number of policies have been issued to develop agriculture and rural areas, but the region still faces difficulties related to climate change, water security, massive migration, fierce competition for farm produce exports, and poor transport infrastructure.

Dutch expert Peter Smeets suggested the region should study drought-resistant plant varieties, prevent riverbank and coastal erosion, establish biodiversity corridors, and improve climate change adaptation capacity for cooperatives.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam said the ministry has agreed to step up agricultural restructuring in combination with ecological tourism and processing industries to effectively and sustainably utilise natural resources, while improving regional connectivity.

Further attention will be paid to promoting synchronous mechanisation from infrastructure to training and enhancing the value of agricultural products.

He also called for developing more logistics, processing and consumption centres in the region.
