According to a government decree issued in 2018, Vietnamese athletes are entitled to 350 million VND ($14,700) for winning a gold medal at the Olympics, with an additional 140 million VND if they break a record. Silver and bronze medalists receive 220 million VND and 140 million VND, respectively.
To further motivate athletes, many social organizations and national sports federations are offering substantial bonuses. The International Sports Fund (ISF) and the Vietnam Olympic Committee have announced that gold medalists at the Paris 2024 Olympics will receive 1 million USD, while silver and bronze medalists will receive 500,000 USD and 200,000 USD, respectively.
Before the Paris 2024 Olympics, various federations have also announced their reward schemes. The Vietnam Shooting Federation is offering 500 million VND for a gold medal, 300 million VND for silver, and 200 million VND for bronze. Former head coach of the Vietnamese shooting team, Nguyen Thi Nhung, is offering 1,000 USD for each shooter who reaches the finals. The Vietnam Boxing Federation has set rewards of 500 million VND for gold, 350 million VND for silver, and 200 million VND for bronze.
Thus, the highest possible reward for a Vietnamese athlete winning a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics could reach up to 26 billion VND. This amount is expected to increase further as individual achievements at the Olympics typically garner significant attention and additional support from sponsors.
In the history of the Olympics, Vietnam has won a total of 5 medals: 1 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze. The nation's only gold medal was achieved by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh, who also won a silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The Vietnamese delegation for the Paris 2024 Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, includes 16 athletes: Do Thi Anh Nguyet and Le Quoc Phong (archery), Tran Thi Nhi Yen (athletics), Nguyen Thuy Linh and Le Duc Phat (badminton), Ha Thi Linh and Vo Thi Kim Anh (boxing), Nguyen Thi Huong (canoeing), Nguyen Thi That (cycling), Pham Thi Hue (rowing), Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen (shooting), Nguyen Huy Hoang and Vo Thi My Tien (swimming), Trinh Van Vinh (weightlifting), and Hoang Thi Tinh (judo). Among these, Tran Thi Nhi Yen and Vo Thi My Tien have received special invitations.
Dang Ha Viet, Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, is leading the delegation, with no deputy head. The flag bearers for the Vietnamese team at the opening ceremony will be Le Duc Phat (badminton) and Nguyen Thi That (cycling).
Dang Ha Viet has stated that the primary goal for the Vietnamese team at the Paris 2024 Olympics is to win medals. Shooting, archery, and weightlifting are seen as strong prospects for achieving this goal.
