On the penultimate day of the Rio competition, swimmer Vo Thanh Tung ended Vietnam’s journey at this year's Paralympic Games with the men’s 100m freestyle S5 class.

Entering the final round, Tung was pinned as a medal hope for Vietnam as he ranked third in the second heat earlier with an impressive time of 1:17.64. Leading the qualifying round was host swimmer Daniel Dias with a time of 1:15.08, far ahead of his opponents.

Eight athletes won the right to compete in the final round. Thanh Tung started in Lane 3.

The Vietnamese athlete swam well and hit the line in second position after the first 50m after 34.75 seconds. However, after the turnaround and heading towards the finish line, Tung’s pace began to fade. Although giving his best attempt, he finished the race with a time of 1:18.02, ranking fifth overall.

Daniel Dias won gold with a time of 1:10.11, far ahead of his followers Roy Perkins from the US who recorded 1:14.55 and the UK’s Andrew Mullen with 1:15.93.

Dias also defeated Tung to win the gold medal in men’s 50m freestyle a few days ago. Currently, the Brazilian most outstanding Paralympian has won a total of nine medals at the 2016 Paralympics, including four gold medals.

Previously, Tung narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the final of the men’s 50m backstroke S5 with 40.13 seconds on September 17. Tung's 50m freestyle silver was the only medal of the Vietnamese swimming squad at the Rio Paralympics.

The Vietnam Paralympic squad ended their campaign at the 2016 Paralympic Games, winning a total of one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, ranking 55th on the medal tally.

Male power-lifter Le Van Cong won the only gold for Vietnam on the first day of competition. Swimmer Vo Thanh Tung added a silver medal in the men’s 50m freestyle. Two bronze medals went to female power-lifter Dang Thi Linh Phuong and male javelin thrower Cao Ngoc Hung.
