Vietnamese athletes pose with medals they won at the ongoing Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships in Kazakhstan.


Nguyen Ngoc Minh Hy won gold in the men’s individual creative poomsae event and pair Tran Ho Duy and Nguyen Phan Khanh Han won the mixed doubles’ creative poomsae event.

Also, Han secured a silver medal in the women’s individual creative poomsae category. Duy, Hy, Tran Dang Khoa, Nguyen Thi Kim Ha and Le Tran Kim Uyen bagged silver in the team’s creative poomsae.

Nguyen Hung Quoc Bao won bronze in the men’s individual standard poomsae event. Bao and Nguyen Thi Hong Trang also recieved bronze medal in the mixed doubles’ standard poomsae. Trio Ha, Uyen and Trang came in third of the women’s team of three standard poomsae.

In the combat category, 2016 world junior defending champion Ho Thi Kim Ngan lost to Khantikulanon Jukanan of Thailand in the women’s semi-final of the 46kg category to take bronze.

Ly Hong Phuc also won a bronze medal in the men’s 68kg after losing to a Iranian rival in the semi-final.

Poomsae taekwondo boost for Viet Nam

Vietnamese taekwondo martial artists got a boost yesterday, with the Asian Taekwondo Union announcing that the poomsae taekwondo event will be held at the Asian Games (Asiad) 2018 in Indonesia for the first time next year.

In recent years, Viet Nam’s poomsae taekwondo team have performed well in international tournaments with gold medals from Chau Tuyet Van, Nguyen Thi Le Kim and Nguyen Thien Phung.

In the Asiad pre-tournament held in South Korea last year, Van and Phung also bagged golds.

Nguyen Thanh Huy, head coach of poomsae taekwondo team said Vietnamese players will train for two months before the event. They will face strong rivals from the hosts Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.
