Vietnam ranks 8th out of 72 countries in terms of its scientific performance, according to a report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Vietnam ranked 8th in PISA 2015 science performance

The Programme for International Student Assessment test results last year showed that Vietnam ranked 8th in science, 22nd in mathematics and 32nd in literacy.

In the science, Vietnamese pupils gained 525 points, higher than the average 493 points. In the maths, Vietnamese pupils scored 495 points, only slightly higher than average 490. 487 points for reading was lower than the average of 493.

10% of the pupils were top performers that were confident to deal with complex modern scientific problems.

Last year, 188 education facilities with 5,826 pupils in Vietnam were chosen for PISA assessment in late April, 2015. Vietnam first participated in PISA assessment in 2012 and will continue the tests in 2018.

Through the PISA tests, Vietnam hopes to improve the international integration of its education, reform local examination methods and help students develop independent thinking and creativity. Participating in PISA is also a way to prepare for the education reform with new text books.
