Vietnam reached the Asian Games women’s football quarterfinals after holding Thailand to a 0-0 draw in their final Group E match on September 21, securing the last available place in the knockout stage.

The result left Vietnam third in Group E with one point and a goal difference of minus nine, enough to advance as one of the two best third-placed teams. They will face China in the quarterfinals.

Vietnam went into the decisive match knowing that a draw would be enough after Bangladesh and Myanmar finished 0-0 in their final Group F encounter earlier in the day.

Thailand, meanwhile, needed a victory and immediately pushed forward in search of an opening goal.

Vietnam responded by defending with discipline and depth, while looking to attack through the pace and movement of Thanh Nha and Nguyen Thi Hoa on the flanks.

The match remained tight through the opening stages, with much of the contest taking place in midfield. Thailand enjoyed more possession but initially struggled to create clear opportunities against Vietnam’s organized defense.

Vietnam threatened in the 21st minute when Nguyen Thi Hoa crossed from the right and Hai Yen looked set to finish, only for a Thai defender to make a timely sliding intervention.

Four minutes later, Van Su tried her luck from more than 30 meters, but her effort failed to seriously trouble Thailand goalkeeper Sodchuen.

Thailand created the best opportunity of the first half in the 29th minute. Kanyanat met the ball from close range but sent her effort narrowly wide of the post.

As Thailand increased the pressure, Vietnam dropped deeper and increasingly looked to counterattack. Goalkeeper Kim Thanh dealt confidently with a dangerous cross in the 35th minute as Thailand continued to search for the breakthrough.

The teams went into half-time still locked at 0-0.

Thailand threatened again shortly after the restart, with Jiraporn controlling the ball before firing a left-footed shot from outside the penalty area. Kim Thanh collected comfortably.

The Vietnamese goalkeeper was called into action again in the 51st minute after Thanh Nha mishandled a cross, reacting quickly to prevent Thailand from capitalizing on the mistake.

Coach Hoang Van Phuc then urged his players to push higher up the pitch, and Vietnam gradually became more adventurous.

Nguyen Thi Hoa broke down the right in the 61st minute and delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, but Hai Yen was unable to get into position for the finish.

The introductions of Vu Thi Hoa, Truc Huong and Thu Xuan gave Vietnam greater fluidity as the second half progressed.

Vietnam came close to taking the lead in the 75th minute when Huynh Nhu produced a dangerous header, only to see the ball go wide.

Substitute Vu Thi Hoa was presented with another opportunity inside Thailand’s penalty area six minutes later but failed to make the most of the chance.

Bich Thuy then headed directly at the Thai goalkeeper in the 87th minute as both teams continued searching for a goal in a lively finish.

Neither side could find a breakthrough, however, and the final whistle confirmed the 0-0 draw Vietnam needed to keep their Asian Games campaign alive.

The result completed a difficult group stage for Vietnam, but the solitary point against Thailand ultimately proved enough to secure a place among the tournament’s final eight teams.

Vietnam will now face China in the quarterfinals.

Before the decisive Thailand match, representatives of the Vietnamese Consulate General in Osaka and members of the Vietnamese community living, studying and working in the city visited the team to offer their support.
